Controller Job Opening in chicago, Illinois - Controller THE JELLYVISION LAB NEEDS A CONTROLLER WITH A SENSE OF HUMOR Best known as the creator of the hit YOU DON�T KNOW JACK game series, The Jellyvision Lab has expanded our roster of engaging personalities beyond virtual game show hosts to virtual teachers, insurance agents, salespeople, advisors� you name it. We�ve pioneered a new approach to interactivity called Interactive Conversation that allows machines to communicate more like people. Not in that AI robot sort of way, but in a radio/television, written-by-writers, performed-by-actors sort of way. The Jellyvision Lab is a small (50 people or so), creative, focused, and driven company, with a strong vision for bringing interactive communication to the web for Fortune 500 partners. THAT�S LOVELY� BUT WHAT�S THE JOB? We�re looking for a Controller to run the money side of our biz. This includes managing monthly, quarterly and annual budgeting, reporting, forecasting, audit and income tax processes, as well as the daily ins and outs. The Controller will implement and oversee a comprehensive set of controls and budgets designed to mitigate risk, ensure the accuracy of the company�s reported financial results, and make sure that reported results comply with Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP). This is a soup-to-nuts position � working closely with our Office Manager/Bookkeeper, you will be the entire Accounting/Finance Department. While we aren�t currently looking for a CFO-level person, we are a growing company, and we are looking for someone who can grow with us. We think that this is a great opportunity for someone with a solid accounting background looking to step into the responsibility of a Controller role and grow from there. Please read on for more specifics� RESPONSIBILITIES  Management o Maintain a documented system of accounting policies and procedures and look for ways to make our procedures more efficient and effective. o Oversee the financial transactions managed by our Office Manager/Bookkeeper. o Recommend benchmarks for measuring company performance. o Meet regularly with other members of the management team to ensure that the finance department is fully integrated with all of our company processes � especially our production process. o Assess the technology needs of the finance department. Evaluate the ways in which we use Quickbooks, SurePayroll, Toggl, and Salesforce to suggest ways that we can better integrate these systems - or, if necessary, evaluate and recommend ERP system solutions. o Work with all departments to find ways to use our financial resources efficiently in everything that we do.  Finances o Manage Jellyvision�s day to day cash flow requirements. o Manage banking functions including incoming and outgoing wires, letters of credit, solvency letters, and monthly bank reconciliations. o Negotiate vendor pricing. o Maintain the chart of accounts and a system of controls over accounting transactions. o Run the annual audit. Manage relationship with external auditors, provide required financial schedules in a timely manner, direct on-site visit, and ensure that internal controls are followed for all transactions. o Handle all aspects of income tax preparation. Work with external accounting firm to provide all necessary information, make sure that all schedules are accurate, and ensure that we are taking advantage of any and all available tax credits.  Reporting o Budgets: Manage the production of the annual budget and ensure that department managers receive regular reports illustrating variance. o Forecast: Responsible for monthly reporting on financials and cash flow. o Projects: Create an efficient way to use timesheet data to run reports on project profitability; analyze the reports to assess how our production process can be made more efficient and profitable. o Intercompany: Perform monthly intercompany reconciliations for Jellyvision Games and Jellyvision Lab to appropriately allocated shared resources. o Board of Directors: Prepare financial statements, bookings reports, and updated forecasts for the Board of Directors. Identify any additional reports or metrics that would be useful.  Compliance o Provide information to external for annual audits/income tax filings. o Comply with all local, state, and federal reporting requirements and tax filings including annual reports and business licenses. o Perform annual 409A valuation.  Human Resources o Manage all aspects of compensation with utmost discretion� biweekly payroll, issuance of tax forms to employees and contractors, timely filing of quarterly payroll reports, etc. o Administer and act as fiduciary to the 401(k) plan. o Work with other members of the HR team to identify and budget for new benefit initiatives. o Manage annual benefits renewal process - analyze financial data to recommend plan design, and implement and communicate plan changes. SKILLS  The financial expertise and accounting skills necessary to establish financial controls, implement accounting best practices, help guide business decisions, and follow up through appropriate measurement reporting. We are looking for a demonstrated knowledge of finance, accounting, budgeting and cost control principles.  You must also be a QuickBooks rockstar, and able to pull together financial reports like you have a magic report-generating wand.  Strong analytical skills. We need someone who is always thinking, quantifying, comparing, and coming up with ways to make our financial processes as efficient and effective as possible.  Great organizational skills, impeccable attention to detail and the motivation to run the entire accounting operation for a small and growing company.  Excellent judgment. You will be called on to make recommendations that will impact every aspect of our business. We need to be able to trust your judgment completely.  Integrity and a commitment to the highest possible ethical standards. The only thing not funny about Jellyvision is our books. While a sense of humor is a requirement for every Jellyvision employee, when it comes to our finances and integrity, we are as serious as a heart attack.  Project and time management skills in spades. You will be balancing multiple priorities and maintaining the day to day operations while ensuring that no monthly, quarterly or annual analysis or reporting requirements go unattended.  The ability to be charming, especially while being persistent. It can be hard to keep creative genius bounded by business critical things like budgets, but you will need to have the skills to keep everyone on track.  As noted above, a sense of humor is a must. Bizarre taste in music and/or deep knowledge of useless pop culture trivia is a plus. EXPERIENCE  Business Experience o 5 years of business experience, with enough exposure to prepare you to run the financial operations of a small business. o Prior experience with financial planning and analysis, and oversight of an organizational budget/forecasting process. o Experience working at one of the �Big Four� and/or in a rapidly growing company a plus. o Significant experience with QuickBooks. Exposure to and ERP systems. o CPA significantly preferred; MBA or Master�s Degree in Finance or Accounting a plus. o Accounting ethics certification a plus. ANYTHING ELSE? Yes.
