Sr. Project Engineer - Engine Controls Job Opening in Plymouth, Michigan - AVL Powertrain Engineering is looking to grow our controls and software team. We are looking for a Senior engineer with at least 7 years of experience in engine controls (primary focus on gasoline) and a broader understanding of vehicle and powertrain controls. Qualified candidates should possess a deep understanding of overall engine control architectures and systems. Experience should include hands on experience with engine controls development and testing on HIL, Dyno or Vehicle. Candidates should be experienced with Matlab/Simulink. C Coding skills also desirable. Candidates must possess great communication skills.
The Senior Project Engineer will provide technical and program expertise and mentoring to Skill Team and Cross-Functional engineering program team activities focusing primarily on engine controls.
The Controls & Electronics Skill Team executes functional integration & optimization of the powertrain software & control systems into the overall vehicle platform. The group is responsible for the overall control system operation. Detailed responsibilities include: Engine, Transmission, Driveline, and Aftertreatment Functional Requirements definition for overall powertrain performance, efficiency, serviceability and reliability of repeatable performance.
This position will be engine controls specific.

The specific roles of a Project Engineer Senior in this effort include:
Defines, plans, and performs Engine Controls Software Development and other relevant engineering project work within project team as required.
Plans and manages engineering resources according to project requirements.
Works on specific phases or aspects of projects such as technical studies, preparation of specifications, technical plans, engine testing, data analysis and validation.
Supports/ensures data quality and writes technical project reports.
Reviews project for compliance with engineering principles, company standards, and customer requirements, including opinions and interpretations.
Coordinates activities concerned with technical development, scheduling, and resolving engineering test issues.
Defines, executes and supports engine performance and emissions research and development activities.
Supports, organizes, and leads customer meetings.
Other duties as required to insure project success
Qualifications and Skills:
A Project Engineer Senior is expected to have demonstrated abilities in the following areas:
Commercial
Quote Leader for a medium size program
Support the Business Development process for specific clients
Efficient on time delivery of program expectations with consistently high feedback
Technical
Expert in engine controls software development and engine testing
Multi-year hands on experience with engines in dyno and/or vehicle applications
Highly skilled in identifying and solving engine control problems
Support calibration work
Knowledge of communication protocols (i.e. CAN, Serial, LIN)
Hybrid powertrain knowledge
Active Matlab Simulink user
C, C++ knowledge
Working knowledge of AUTOSAR architecture
Familiarity with functional safety concept and standards e.g. ISO 26262
Identify, initiate, and support opportunities for technology development, process improvements, tool development, and knowledge capture and re-use.
Provide effective mentorship for other departmental staff in areas of expertise
Published at least 2 papers accepted by a professional organization or 2 patents awarded
Global AVL implementation of technology
Familiarity with regulatory and market segment requirements and end-user expectations
Independent functionality in at least three of the following areas:
Base Engine Control
After-Treatment Control
Hybrid Powertrain Control
On Board Diagnostics Control
Powertrain Controls Software Development Tools & Methods
Relational
Leadership of small to medium size technical teams
Working effectively with customers and other program staff and team members
Accountability for individual and team delivery
Negotiation for overall success
Program and resource coordination
Active pursuit of personal and departmental improvement
Effective communication with all levels of the program team
Experience and Education
7 years experience in area of expertise
Bachelor?s degree in Engineering or related field required
Master?s degree in Engineering preferred.
