Senior Staff Accountant (Statutory Accounting) Job Opening in Somerville, Massachusetts - Summary of position: The Senior Staff Accountant works with finance management to prepare various regulatory filings and record investment established accounting procedures, this position performs a variety of well-defined accounting duties including preparation of journal entries and reconciliations.
Essential Functions:
Prepare quarterly, monthly and annual statutory insurance filings to the NAIC/DOI. This includes the statutory financials, footnotes, investment schedules and other exhibits related to the statutory statement.
Solid understanding of both Statutory and GAAP reporting
Coordinate with external parties to obtain required information for the filings.
Monitors reporting regulations and statutory accounting principles to ensure that the company follows accounting guidance and reporting requirements.
Responsible for the monthly investment activity. This includes acting as the liaison with the investment portfolio custodian to ensure accurate recording of the GAAP and Statutory investment securities and related investment income, preparation of journal entries, and related footnotes.
Responsible for all journal entries and transactions for assigned accounts
Responsible for monthly account reconciliations for assigned accounts including resolution of variances
Maintain documentation for all related functions
Preparation of ad hoc financial analysis and reports as needed

Work is normally performed in a typical office work environment.
Requirements:
Bachelors in Accounting Degree, business administration or related field or the equivalent combination of training and experience in healthcare. CPA desired.
Strong knowledge of Statutory Reporting
This position requires the incumbent to have at least 5-7 years of experience in statutory accounting, preferably in healthcare.
ASO (Administrative Services Only) experience a plus.
Applicants must possess strong systems skills; and solid financial analysis skills.
Sound working knowledge of statutory accounting principles is essential.
Intermediate to Advanced Excel skills required
Applicants must have experience with Microsoft Dynamics Management Reporter.
Must be energetic, multi-task oriented, organized, able to set priorities, and meet internal and external deadlines.
Communication skills are essential for the incumbent to accurately obtain, interpret and transcribe a variety of communications and instructions.
Must demonstrate accountability, be driven, and have strong motivation to deliver high quality results based on thorough analysis.
Must possess strong decision making skills.
Must be able to adapt to change and is motivated to improve processes.
