Position Location: Los Angeles, CA (Mid-Wilshire area)
Reports to: CEO
Position Status: This position is a permanent full time position with benefits. Starts immediately.
Salary Range: $60,000 to $75,000
ORGANIZATION DESCRIPTION
The Solve ME/CFS Initiative (SMCI) is the nation's leading non-profit dedicated to conquering ME/CFS (Myalgic Fatigue Syndrome). SMCI is an innovative, fast-paced, creative organization, focused on medical research and advocacy. Its mission is ?We will make ME/CFS understood, diagnosable and treatable.? ME/CFS affects 2.5 million people in the United States and is a severely debilitating disease.
This position is an opportunity to play a key role on a highly capable team to make a difference in the world for millions of people who suffer with this debilitating disease.
Responsibilities:
Controller
Guide financial decisions by establishing, monitoring, and enforcing policies and procedures.
Manage the annual audit. Prepare required schedules and respond to auditors? requests.
Prepare budgets by establishing schedules, collecting, analyzing, and consolidating financial data, recommending plans. Manages budget process with CEO and department leaders.
Provides status of financial condition by collecting, interpreting, and reporting financial data.
Handle Accounts payable/Accounts receivable
Interact with building management
Reconcile bank and credit card statements
Prepare required schedules for Form 5500; work with auditors to submit return to Department of Labor
Manage all relationships with financial vendors (i.e. Banks)
Other accounting duties as required.
Human Resources. Manage human resources functions including:
Work with ADP to process bi-weekly payroll
Oversee required state/federal tax reports
Maintain accurate personnel records
Oversee employee benefits, including vacation and other paid time off
Manage benefits vendors (e.g. Fidelity for 403(b), medical)
Maintain current Human Resources manual
With CEO, handle other HR issues as they arise.
Administrative
Manage physical and electronic files; maintain repository or all organization documents
Manage organization insurance, with broker
Handle other administrative needs.
Contract administration
With science staff, manages the organization?s grants, ensuring timely payment and compliance. These grants are primarily to academic institutions.
With science staff, provides support to grants written and received by SMCI.
Manages and tracks other organization (non-academic) agreements
Support accounting-related issues
Complete Development bequest paperwork, as needed
Work with Development Director to reconcile donor funds monthly
Support maintenance of 501c(3) solicitation licenses in fifty states, as needed
Support completion of workplace campaign renewal applications and United Way, as needed
Other duties as assigned.
Qualifications
The ideal candidate would have the following capabilities and qualities:
At least five years? experience in accounting, with growing responsibility.
At least ten years of total work experience.
Experience working in a non-profit strongly preferred.
Experience managing the budgeting and budget tracking process.
Experience with QuickBooks required.
Highly organized. Ability to manage and prioritize work.
Proficiency with Microsoft Office suite. Excel experience a must.
Very high attention to detail.
Absolutely trustworthy; able to retain confidential information.
Excellent communication skills ? written and oral.
Bachelor?s degree in Accounting, Economics, or Business Administration required. CPA preferred.
Interest in non-profit work, joining a team committed to solving a devastating illness.
Reliable team player who will be a collegial partner to staff, constituents and external stakeholders.
A professional and resourceful style; the ability to work independently and as a team player, to take initiative and to manage multiple tasks and projects.
