Dental Director Job Opening in Portland, Maine - ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS: *
Direct Clinical Care:
Provide direct patient dental care under the tenants of the Greater Portland Health provider standards including, but not limited to, extractions, restorations, impressions, x-rays and oral exams.
Diagnose, treat and/or properly refer while maintaining expected dental standards.
Recommend diagnostic or therapeutic interventions with attention to safety, cost, invasiveness, simplicity, acceptability, adherence, and efficacy.
Prescribe medications based on efficacy, safety, and cost as legally authorized.
Evaluate patients in a timely and courteous manner.
Appropriately chart in electronic medical records at Greater Portland Health within 48 hours.
Work collegially with the dental team and with other health disciplines, including sharing patient care.
Contribute to the training and proficiencies of clinical learners, including dental students and dental hygiene students.
Function as an advocate for patients, particularly those with fewer economic and social resources.
Educate patients about their oral health, tailoring instructions to patients? individual circumstanced.
Maintains active Maine license and completes all required continuing education.
Performance Improvement:
Participate in quality improvement programs that will assure that patients receive quality care in the office and from other providers of oral health service, using peer review, medical records audits, grievances and other mechanisms as appropriate.
Actively identify practice improvement opportunities and implement process improvement plans under the direction of the CMO regarding the entire patient care experience.
Develop and track Quality Metrics for the dental program.
Coordinate to assure completion of daily huddles for the dental teams.
Complete annual/critical competencies identified for new employees for those competencies formally trained and authorized to complete.
Provide in-service education to staff in formally qualified areas of expertise and as directed by CMO.
Assist the CMO to implement improvement strategies based upon patient satisfaction survey results.
Complies with and shares in implementation of all OSHA safety and infection control requirements.
Works as an integral part of the interdisciplinary team to ensure high-quality patient care and outcomes.
Administrative:
Develop, maintain and implement formal clinic policies and procedures.
Guide dentists and professional staff to deliver consistent standards of care and assure clinical practices are of the highest quality.
Participate in the hiring of clinical dental staff and orient and train new professional staff.
Evaluate the professional staff yearly to insure performance goals related to production, clinical quality and regulatory compliance are met.
Enhances public image of the program and agency through professional conduct and appearance.
Participates in outreach activities on behalf of patients and Greater Portland Health.
Attends required staff meetings and, as requested, participates in program planning.
Communicates with team members to induce a positive and productive work environment.
Conforms to the terms of employment agreement, all grant and funding conditions, and any relevant agreements between Greater Portland Health and other entities.
Performs other related activities, as required, to assure program/department success.
Interacts harmoniously and effectively with others, focusing upon the attainment of organizational goals and objectives through a commitment to teamwork.
Conforms to acceptable attendance and punctuality standards as expressed in the Employee Handbook.
Assists in the preparation of an operating budget for the oral health department and in conjunction with the Chief Financial Officer and oversees compliance with the oral health budget. In addition, the Dental Director shall prepare special grant and project budgets as required to meet the goals of the organization.
Participates in short and long term program planning for the oral health department, including development of goals and objectives.
Supervises, advises, counsels and disciplines the oral health professional providers in conjunction with the CMO. Complies with all safety rules and protocols, as established by the organization. Immediately reports any workplace injury to supervisor.
Performs all other duties, as assigned.
EDUCATION, EXPERIENCE AND KNOWLEDGE QUALIFICATIONS:
Degree from an accredited School of Dentistry and a valid license to practice dentistry in the state of Maine required.
Administrative, management, PI, and budget development experience preferred
Demonstrated ability to perform all aspects of basic dentistry services and to work as a team member.
Excellent oral and written communication skills.
Strong commitment to public health dentistry.
Clinical and public health experience, required.
Must be registered with the State of Maine Board of Dental Examiners.
Will have up-to-date training and certification in Healthcare Provider Basic Life Support issued by American Heart Association, American Red cross or American Health & Safety Institute. Must obtain within three months if not current at hire.
SKILLS AND ABILITIES QUALIFICATIONS AND OTHER REQUIREMENTS:
5 - 8 years of hands-on dentistry experience; up to date knowledge of regulations, methods, trends and equipment; professional dental association membership.
Successful upper level dental field management experience in a busy environment.
Established comfort working with diverse cultures, backgrounds, lifestyles and experiences.
Knowledge of the principles and practice of family dentistry.
Knowledge of the state and federal laws pertaining to dentistry and to community health centers.
Knowledge of the structure and function of community health centers.
Maintains Board Certification.
