Executive Director Job Opening in New Haven, Connecticut - EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR JOB DESCRIPTION
The Executive Director of Literacy Volunteers of Greater New Haven (LVGNH) provides leadership to the agency and organization. The Executive Director reports to the Board of Directors and is responsible for the organization?s achievement of its mission and financial objectives. This position is focused on the Management, Marketing and Fiscal Development of the agency.
The Executive Director (ED) helps develop and is responsible for implementing the strategic plan of the organization which will center on maintaining effective programming and continued growth. The ED must have a strong commitment to raising literacy awareness. The ED is the primary face of the organization and serves as the lead fundraiser, marketer, strategic planner, and chief executive managing the organization, including day-to-day activities and supervision of all personnel. The candidate should be available to take on this role on December 1, 2017.

Key Responsibilities :
? Management
Strategic and Tactical
o Carries out the plans and policies authorized by the Board.
o Participates with the Board in the development and fulfillment of the organization?s strategic plan.
o Oversees and supports the development, design and delivery of program initiatives across multiple locations to ensure the organization?s goals and objectives align with the mission and strategic plan.
o Provides leadership in developing programs, organizational and financial plans with the Board of Directors and staff.
o Recommends strategic initiatives and implements tactical plans to achieve those initiatives.
Operations
o Oversees and directs all day-to-day operational functions including work flow, risk management, insurance, instructional technology, accounting and program activities.
o Maintains official records and legal documents. Ensures compliance with federal, state, and local regulations and Board policies.
o Oversees payroll, deposits and bill payments with bookkeeper.
o Fulfills organization?s and grantees? data management, accountability and auditing requirements.
o Analyzes data to identify strengths and needs of students and volunteer tutors, program outcomes and areas for improvement; collaborates with stakeholders to carry out program changes.
o Recruits, hires, manages, evaluates, coaches and supports the staff.
o Maintains positive work climate to keep staff motivated.
Board Involvement
o Serves on the LVGNH Board and attends Board committee meetings; provides staff support to committees.
o Provides accurate and timely information to the Board regarding issues needing the Board?s attention.
o Oversees preparation of timely reports to grant-funders, the Board of Directors and donors.
o Keeps board and staff apprised of appropriate activities and information.
Promote Financial Health - Development
o Participates in the planning and management all fundraising and development activities, including special events, fundraising efforts, sponsorships, the annual appeal, online giving campaigns, etc.
o Implements an effective fundraising plan, cultivating and stewarding existing donors and identifying new opportunities for revenue and sustainability from a diverse portfolio of donors including individuals, foundations, corporations, and government grant opportunities.
o Researches, writes and administers grant applications to public and private organizations.
o Supervises any staff or contractors conducting grant writing or other development activities.
o Represents the agency at hearings, reviews, and site visits with funders.
o Develops the annual budget and provides accountability for budget and program operation revenue and expenses; provides input to treasurer, finance committee and Board monthly or as required.
o Oversees the input, tracking, analysis and reporting of data in the donor database.
o Oversees the communications plan and maintains interactions with donors and other constituents.
o Maintains an up to date knowledge of developments and trends in literacy and philanthropy.
Volunteer Outreach and Community Awareness - Marketing
o Serves as the organization?s chief spokesperson; raises visibility through effective public relations and communication strategies throughout Greater New Haven, Meriden/Wallingford, and the Valley, including effective use of social media.
o Promotes literacy and the program in the community; enhances the organization?s image, including literacy awareness.
o Cultivates networking and collaborative opportunities with other
o Establishes and maintains good working relationships with community partners.
o Represents the agency to the media and the general public.
o Serves as LVGNH?s primary representative to the CT State Department of Education, and municipal Boards of Education.
o Participates on the Literacy Coalition Board representing LVGNH.
o Identifies, plans and directs recruitment methods and activities for volunteers in all aspects of the program (tutors, Board, committee members, other volunteers and interns).
o Coordinates the development and distribution of promotional materials and publicity.
o Directs all aspects of communication pieces and collateral materials.
EXPERIENCE REQUIRED:
Minimum bachelor?s degree, preferably in education or management, including non-profit management; master?s degree preferred.
o Minimum of three years experience in a leadership role, preferably at a non-profit organization. Familiarity with Adult Education programs, literacy volunteer programs, and/or similar non-profits a plus.
o Experience in the areas of fund-raising, grant writing, special events and donor cultivation, including usage of a donor database.
Experience in fiscal management, budget preparation and financial reporting.
o Supervisory experience and team leadership skills. Excellent communication skills (written, verbal, and public speaking).
o Experience with social media as a communications, public relations and fundraising tool preferred.
o Competencies with Instructional Technology and communications systems including Microsoft Office.
Ability to track and analyze performance, results and outcomes and communicate their impact.
Flexibility to travel within the agency area and work some evenings and weekends.
Strong interpersonal skills and ability to work well with internal and external stakeholders.
Strong organizational skills including ability to meet deadlines, quickly establish priorities, thoroughness, timeliness, and attention to detail.
Integrity in dealing with all constituents: staff, volunteers, Board of Directors, donors, vendors and peer organizations.
