Public Relations (PR) A good P.R. Rep. should have excellent writing skills, and must be creative enough to come up with a special campaign. To do this, the PR Rep. must have a good knowledge of the music business , and he or she must understand the complexities of the industry in order to be effective in the company's campaign. Responsible for creating an image the business they are representing. This process begins by evaluating the public's perception or image of the client. From this, the PR Rep. might find that the company is well known, but has a poor image among the general public. Or, if the company is just getting started in the business, the Public Relations Rep. must build the company's image literally from scratch. Must know how to write press releases, assemble press kits, and arrange press conferences; and to be successful with their campaigns, the representative must know how to find an interesting angle that the public will buy into. Marketing Work locally or regionally, and their prime responsibility is to come up with numerous ways and tactics to market the company. Locally, a Marketing Rep will oversee specific territorial markets (like a specific city); while the regional rep oversees entire regions (like a part of the country). Plan and implement strategies including delivering and setting up promotional displays in record stores, concocting radio station giveaway contests, and so on. A popular tactic involves a joint promotion between a radio station and record store, where artists make promotional appearances in record stores, which is combined with radio stations giving away that artist's album in conjunction. To start as an intern might be the best way into a position as a Marketing Rep, because he or she will gain hands-on, real world experience with the company. The main job of an A&R Scout (also known as A&R Rep or Talent Scout), is keeping up with the new trends and new artists in the music industry as they emerge, and recommending them to A&R managers also known as the Artist Manager. They need an excellent understanding of the contemporary music scene. A large part of the job is reading trade papers, music magazines and websites. Blogs and social networking sites are a very important part of the process as they are the most organic source of information in spotting trends. The A&R Scout will also spend a lot of time listening to music and attending numerous gigs, visiting clubs, going to showcases, listening to tapes and demo recordings, and watching videotapes of acts performing. They may also be responsible for helping find songs for the artists signed with The Hector O Sanchez Music Company.
