POSITION SUMMARY
Perform administrative and certain clinical duties under the direction of physician. Administrative duties may include scheduling appointments, maintaining medical records, billing, and coding for insurance purposes. Clinical duties may include taking and recording vital signs and medical histories, preparing patients for examination, drawing blood, and administering medications as directed by physician. Responsible to work with providers to deliver high-quality and cost-effective personalized care to patients at the health center. Perform duties under the direction of the physician.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include the following. Other duties may be assigned.
Appropriate training, direction, and guidance will be offered within the employee?s scope of practice in order for the employee to competently perform duties assigned under the discretion of the supervising providers, managers, and executive team.
Ability to learn and utilize the internal Electronic Health Record system for patient tracking and documentation, including management of patients in need of preventative or chronic care services.
Make phone calls or send letters to patients in need of preventative care or chronic care services.
Take medical direction and medical procedures from RNs and providers.
Duties include providing all services within a Family Practice setting. Specific duties would include, but are not limited to: Taking patients back to exam rooms and preparing them for NP/PA/MD; take vital signs (blood pressure, temperature, weight, etc.) and personal information as needed; assist the NP/PA/MD whenever needed: give and record lab work and injections as ordered by NP/PA/MD or nurse; perform and document ear irrigations, O2 saturations, EKG?s and x-ray duties, and urinary catheterizations if trained to do so and under provider direction.
Be willing to train and perform the following laboratory procedures: venous and capillary blood draws for mail-out and in-house lab tests; cultures and other specimens to be mailed out; urinalysis ? chemical and microscopic; sed rate (ESR); in-house rapid tests such as strep, influenza, pregnancy, etc.; fecal occult blood test; labs on automated machine such as CBC, HCT, hemoglobin, pro-time/INR, urinalysis if automated, finger-stick glucose, and any other lab requested by NP/PA/MD.
Performance of the following routine procedures: make sure exam rooms comply with OSHA regulations; maintain separate container for medical waste and normal waste; change bandages; clean and sterilize instruments and other supplies; keep inventory and exam rooms stocked of all lab and medical supplies and reorder when necessary; check all lab and medical equipment to ensure proper functioning is in order; maintain appropriate log books on all lab work, injections, X-rays and EKG?s performed; record past immunizations in patient?s electronic medical record and tracking card; maintain a clean and sanitary environment; assist in the maintenance of the patient tracking and the return files.
Assist Receptionist with telephone, appointments, and other minor office procedures when necessary.
Go to Nursing Home or Patients Home to collect blood samples if ordered by NP/PA/MD.
Return to the office after hours for emergencies if requested by NP/PA/MD.
Store all samples left by drug representatives, remove and destroy outdated samples.
Place referral calls when requested by NP/PA/MD.
Become familiar with and maintain the laboratory policy and procedure handbook.
Perform quality control per CLIA regulations on lab tests along with performing proficiency testing per CLIA regulations.
Be an active, positive participant of their care team.
Management of long term care for acute and chronically ill patients, including care coordination and development of care plans and self-management plans.

Coordinate patient care by following up on patient self-referrals and consultation orders.
Manage patient panel with MD, PA-C/CNP by following up with patients in need of preventative screenings, chronic care management or other care by phone, mail or secure message.
Work with MD, PA-C/CNP, RN, LPN to support patients through development of care plans and self-management plans.
Participate in daily team meetings (huddles) and staff meetings.

QUALIFICATIONS

High school diploma or GED. Medical Assistant diploma and in the State of South Dakota. Have experience involving the use of clinical information programs. Familiar with a variety of the field?s concepts, practices, and procedures. Depending on clinic location and need, VA certification may be necessary to perform essential functions to accommodate VA patients.
TRAVEL
May travel to continuing education workshops and/or fill in at other Community Health Centers as needed.
SKILLS
Excellent patient care skills, Professional and discrete manner at all times, Ability to work as a team player at all times. Possess strong grasp of clinical work flow in a community health center setting. Have experience involving the use of clinical information programs. Familiar with a variety of the field's concepts, practices, and procedures. Capable of or willing to learn office laboratory procedures.
COMPUTER SKILLS
Must have experience with Electronic Health Records Program, Outlook and other Microsoft Office Programs.

WORK ENVIRONMENT Employee generally works within the interior of a healthcare clinic environment. Hours of operation and specific staff scheduling may vary between worksite based on operation need. The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate. Frequent exposure to communicable diseases, body fluids, toxic substances, medicinal preparations, radiation, and other conditions common to a clinical environment may routinely be encountered.
