Director of Health Services / DON (LPN) Job Opening in Charleston, South carolina - The Palmettos of Charleston is a 60-apartment Assisted Living Community located in W. Ashley and we are an affiliate of NHC National Healthcare Corporation.
Candidates must have a minimum of 5 years experience in Assisted Living or LTC. Must be familiar with SC state regulations. This position also requires previous management experience. The Director of Health Services is responsible the nursing department as a whole and we have approximately 25 nursing partners (CNA's, MedTechs, caregivers).

Primary function : Coordinates & manages the nursing department. Responsible for the overall direction, coordination and evaluation of nursing care and services provided to the Residents.
Supervisory Responsibilities :
-Supervises nursing care provided by licensed nurses and others for whom they are administratively or professionally responsible.
-Carries out supervisory responsibilities in accordance with the organizational policies and applicable laws.
-Interview, hires & trains employees.
-Plans and assigns direct work.
-Prepares performance evaluations with the understanding that such evaluations impact tenure and wage increases.
-Meaningful rewards and disciplines partners.
-Approves the correction of errors in time cards. Authorize overtime as necessary.
-Receives and dissolves partner complaints.
-Monitors and corrects job performance of partners.
-Supervises the Community in absence of Executive Director.
*Uses independent judgment and discretion on behalf of the organization in the performance of these duties.
Qualifications:
-Freedom from illegal use of drugs.
-Freedom from use and effects of drugs and alcohol in the workplace.
-Anyone found guilty by a court of law of abusing, neglecting, or mistreating individuals in a health care related setting are ineligible for employment.
Education and/or Experience: A graduate of an accredited school of professional nursing. Management or supervisory experience in long-term care, acute care, restorative, or geriatric nursing preferred.
Certificates, Licenses, Registrations : A Licensed Nurse who is currently licensed to practice by the state. Maintains current CPR certification.
Essential Functions & Responsibilities:
-Responsible for the overall direction, coordination, and evaluation of the nursing department.
-Assures that adequate strategies are in place to verify the current licensure and credentials of nursing employees.
-Schedules and performs Resident rounds to monitor and evaluate the quality and appropriateness of care received.
-Maintains administrative authority, responsibility, and accountability for the proper charting and documentation of care and of medications and treatments.
-Maintains for each level of nursing personnel: The nursing services philosophy and objectives. (Standards of practice and Policies and Procedures).
-Works on the units (as MedTech or caregiver) if necessary to meet staffing ratios.
-Knows the rational for the effect of medications and treatments and correctly administer.
-Reports and documents the Resident's symptoms, responses, and status.
-Collaborates with the Resident, members of the healthcare team and, when appropriate, the Resident's responsible party in the interest of the Residents health.
-Obtains and provides instruction and supervision as necessary when implementing nursing procedures or practices.
-Director of Health Services directs and participates in the following:
**Perform nursing assessments. Develop care plans. Consults with physician or
Practitioners. Clarifies orders or treatment regimen. Selects and institutes appropriate nursing interventions which might be required to stabilize a resident?s condition and/or prevent complications.
Residents Rights: Promotes Residents' rights, assists Residents to make informed decisions, and treats Resident with dignity and respect. Reports suspected abuse or neglect. Supports independent expression, choice and decision-making consistent with applicable law and regulation.
Leadership: Demonstrates willingness to try new tasks, generates new ideas for change, evaluates and recognizes priorities, challenges others to learn, keeps current and integrates new information, communicates and models organization values and fosters high performance.
Quality Improvement: Applies quality improvement methods and techniques and identifies processes for improvement in daily work.
Environment of Care: Demonstrates understanding of fire and emergency procedures, participates in fire and disaster drills, demonstrates understanding of safety and security procedures, applies safety and security precautions, demonstrates understanding of hazardous materials plan and demonstrates proper use of equipment.
Information Management: Records data as needed. Promotes confidentiality of Resident information.
Interpersonal Skills: Demonstrates active listening techniques, gains support through effective relationships, treats others with dignity and respect, seeks feedback, sets clear standards for performance, evaluates job performance and provides effective feedback, establishes systems to measure effectiveness, efficiency and service and creates and maintains reporting mechanisms.
