This is a new position created primarily to improve profitability and maintain operational excellence by eliminating duplication, waste and inefficiencies. The position reports directly to the CFO and acts independently to initiate, implement and document operational excellence activities plus coordinate, plan, document and fully manage implementations. The Director maintains versatility and responds positively to periodically shifting of project focus and recognition of the importance of maintaining team flexibility we believe to be vital for success.
The initial responsibility of this position is to achieve a comprehensive understanding of all company operations including each department?s connectivity and interdependency and their contributions to productivity. Once accomplished the incumbent is to identify the top opportunities and lead the reengineering effort to accomplish maximum operational efficiencies. A strong IT proficiency is required to facilitate collaboration between IT and the functional areas. The ultimate output targets are redesigned standard operating procedures and enhanced system utilization, to reduce human processing, error-proof processes and create much greater capacity with the current resource structure.
This position may require periodic engagement with professional consultants to establish, verify and confirm company key performance indicators to achieve and preserve operational efficiencies. The director is the project leader, the primary contact for consultants and is charged with executing project initiatives, tracking progress and maximizing value of consulting engagements.
A critical application of operational excellence in the business is the implementation of new products and customers. The position is heavily involved, on an ad hoc basis, in the design and implementation of new opportunities. Most importantly, the Director of Operational Excellence develops the blueprint for successful implementation that is broadly applied to various initiatives and new business.
DUTIES
Create current and future state value stream maps for all significant operations of the business and identify bottlenecks, areas of waste and kaizen opportunities. Lead the organization through kaizen events and establish relevant standard work to sustain the gains from these improvement actions.
Act as primary liaison between functional departments and the IT team to properly communicate business needs in a technically relevant manner. Coordinate with Chief Information Officer to prioritize business requests and project manage implementation timelines.
Project manage implementation and other projects as required. This entails interface with clients and/or internal staff to produce functional specifications, design documents and other blue prints for the project. Define scope, schedule budget and quality metrics for both ongoing operational excellence and ad hoc project initiatives.
Identify resource requirements and constraints. Prepare, maintain and update project plans, agendas and systems set-up for projects. Collaborate with functional leaders to assemble project teams and lead project implementation. On an ongoing basis, update the project plan with actuals and forecasts.
Coordinate all implementation project matters and monitor progress on an ongoing basis. Assign and document project responsibilities ensuring that activity, integration and productivity are employed in the most efficient manner while still meeting project targets. Manage resources within respective departments and/or operations as well as materials committed to the projects to ensure that project milestones are met and completed on time.
Keep stakeholders apprised of both operational excellence and ad hoc projects? status and respond to questions or inquiries regarding the project. Maintain open communications and relationships with clients as well as the project team, coordinating and conducting meetings as appropriate. Conduct risk assessment of strategic, technical, financial, or business factors affecting the project.
Create standard operating procedures and work instructions as an outcome of operational excellence activities and implementation blueprint models. Particular value is assigned to error-proofing, elimination of rework and ease of new associate integration.
QUALIFICATIONS
Five + years of operational excellence and project management experience required.
Formalized education or training in project management practices, theories, and processes is preferred. Lean Enterprise and/or Six Sigma certifications are desired and experience with healthcare preferred.
A thorough knowledge and understanding of business and technology as normally obtained through the completion of a Bachelor?s Degree in a business or technology related major.
