Staff Accountant Job Opening in Stamford, Connecticut - Northwestern Mutual - Stamford is seeking a detailed, team oriented person to join us as a staff accountant. The position is accountable for the overall financial health and the day-to-day accounting function of office operations.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
Accounting Functions
Work collaboratively with the Chief Financial Officer and Leadership Teams to:
Account for the accuracy of the accounting records of the office
Oversee vendor relationships
Process financial representative commissions and allowances
Oversee and Process Payroll for staff
Administer staff benefit plans such as medical, retirement, PTO plans, etc.
Maintain systems of internal controls to safeguard financial assets of the office
Monitor banking activities of the office
Prepare and manage quarterly tax submissions to the IRS.
Work with outside accountant in the preparation and filing of the annual federal and state tax returns
Oversee funds and activity in escrow accounts
Educate new financial representatives on how their compensation is paid through commissions, fees, and bonuses
Manage collections from terminated representatives
Financial Health of the Office
Work collaboratively with the Chief Financial Officer and Leadership Teams to:
Monitor financial representative indebtedness and process collection procedures as necessary.
Forecast and prepare budgets for the office operation
Regularly meet with the managing partner and/or director(s) to analyze financial statements in comparison to budget projections and recommend adjustments and corrective action.
Forecasts income & expenses and works with the Managing Partner/Managing Directors on resource management
Monitor and maximize cash flow on home office reimbursement plan
Analyzes financial reports for the Managing Partner/Managing Directors
Train new financial representatives on compensation
Oversees and directs the work of the assistant staff accountant
Qualifications
The qualified candidate should be capable of fulfilling the duties of the Staff Accountant, plus have:
2 years or less of experience in accounting, including financial statement preparation, general ledger maintenance, annual tax filings, payroll, and benefits administration.
An Associate?s Degree or better in accounting or finance. Bachelors or advanced degree preferred
Proficiency in the use of Microsoft Office, specifically Excel, and technological savvy.
Knowledge of standard accounting software programs, including Quicken personal finance software
Strong presentation, persuasion, oral and written communication skills
Strong people skills
Strong personal code of ethics, including maintaining confidentiality.
High self-motivation and strong organization skills
Ability to adapt and learn in a fast-paced and dynamic work environment
Team player and positive attitude
