Auto-Owners Insurance Company, a top-rated Insurance Carrier, is seeking an experienced and motivated Medical Director to join our team. This position is based out of our home office in Lansing, Michigan, and would be responsible for building and developing our growing team of medical professionals.
The Medical Director will provide leadership, direction and functional expertise on complex projects and initiatives for the Company Medical Team. Strategic oversight of cases and providing medical expertise to the Claims Division will also be required. The Medical Director will coordinate and advance collaborative partnerships with other divisions as well, such as Human Resources and Underwriting, by applying medical knowledge to support the business needs.
The position requires the following, but is not limited to:
Strategy
Oversee Company medical programs and resources, directing activities with other departments, divisions, and external partners
Develop and implement initiatives focused on functional restoration and/or return to work for complex chronic pain claimants
Apply data analytics, predictive models, and industry trends to develop utilization management strategies
Improve quality and enhance capabilities of Company Medical Team
Medical
Collaborate with associates to provide medical expertise during the investigation, evaluation, and appropriate resolution of individual insurance injury claims, focusing on workers? compensation insurance, personal injury protection insurance, and liability insurance claims
Review and interpret medical records and evaluate for relatedness to the accident
Review insurance claims and evaluate the appropriateness and cost-effectiveness of the medical treatment and services
Perform mortality and morbidity risk assessments as well as assist in projecting medical costs for insurance claims reserving and settlement analysis
Organizational Effectiveness
Work in conjunction with the pharmacy team to manage pharmacy benefit design and pharmacy-related expenditures
Act as a liaison and advisor for insurance associates communicating with healthcare providers and directly engage with providers when necessary
Training/Leadership
Prepare and deliver training to non-clinical insurance associates using a variety of modalities including but not limited to:
Written materials
Live presentations
WebEx and/or telephonic presentations
Serve as a resource and provide ongoing education to members of the Company Medical Team
Maintain a high level of clinical expertise and continuously seek opportunities to expand insurance knowledgebase and advance clinical skills
Education & Experience
Doctor of Medicine (MD) or Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine (DO) degree with valid unrestricted license or eligible for licensure to practice medicine in the state of Michigan
Board certified, preferably in one the following specialties:
Occupational medicine
Orthopedic surgery
Physical medicine and rehabilitation (PM&R)
Minimum of 10 years clinical experience with a strong clinical background in at least one of the following:
Orthopedics
Occupational medicine
Pain management
Neurology
Rehabilitation
Trauma care
Experience in the following is highly desirable, though not required:
Managed care
Utilization review
Disability insurance
Oversight of multidisciplinary teams
Academic teaching or preceptorship
Prior leadership or management experience is required
Possess a valid driver?s license
