Medical Assistant Job Opening in Wilmington, North carolina - The Medical Assistant works collaboratively with the Chief Medical Officer, clinical and administrative staff, and volunteers to provide a wide range of primary care services which encompasses health promotion, injury and illness prevention, treatment and monitoring of commonly encountered health problems and injuries, monitoring of stable chronic health problems, and community development and advocacy. Performs clinical and non-clinical procedures within the scope of expertise, protocols, and available equipment.
MAJOR DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Reception Duties:
Register patients.
Verify insurance or Charity Care status.
Scan and copy documents.
Computer entry.
Schedule appointments.
Collect co-pays.
Place appointment reminder calls.
Maintain a neat and tidy reception area and bathrooms throughout clinic hours.
Data entry of statistics and codes.
Other duties as assigned.
Medical Assistant Duties:
Assess and interview patients in preparation for medical office visits.
Assist health providers with treatments and exams.
Open/Close clinic building as directed by supervisor(s).
Ensure exam rooms and clinical spaces have all necessary supplies, forms and documentation.
Prepare hazardous waste boxes and sharps containers. Empty trash from treatment rooms and dispose of biohazard waste properly.
Perform in-office CLIA waived testing and run
Call patients with labs results and instructions as requested.
Access appropriate electronic record(s) for reports, and diagnostic results
Triage patient calls and act upon them appropriately
Assist with medication refills
Provide patient education materials and instruction
Prepares and maintains complete and accurate charts, case files, records and other documents; reviews material prepared by other staff for completeness and accuracy. Ensure all lab tests, clinical reports, and any other required documentation is filed appropriately in patient charts.
Attends, participates in, and contributes to in-services education and staff training sessions to maintain and increase skills, and to teach others.
Maintain patient privacy and confidentiality.
Other duties as assigned.
Administrative Duties:
Schedule volunteer administrative and clinical staff, including recruitment, orientation, skills assessment, and training.
Serve as a clinical and administrative resource to Chief Medical Officer, Operations Manager, clinical staff and volunteers.
Inventory and order clinical supplies.
Gather and communicate the supportive data for outside referrals.
Reconcile the referrals/labs.
Respond to requests for medical records.
Trouble-shoot computer, scanner, and copier problems.
Interpret clinic policy and procedures for the patients.
Other duties as assigned.
SUPERVISORY CONTROLS
Work is performed under the general direction of the Chief Medical Officer. This position requires consistent, sound judgment and the ability to work independently with minimum direct supervision. The Medical Assistant will work within the context of standing orders and protocols. The supervisor outlines the overall program objectives and priorities, time limit, and resources available. The employee plans and schedules recurring work, handles routine problems, and completes work using own initiative. Exercise professional knowledge and judgment in interpreting guidelines and applicability. Work is reviewed from an overall
standpoint in terms of meeting objectives, effectiveness, and compliance with laws, regulations, policies and procedures.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, ABILITIES
Knowledge of state laws and regulations and scope of work; responsibilities, professional principles, procedures and techniques as applicable.
Knowledge of symptoms and normal course of acute and chronic illnesses.
Knowledge of standard medical record-keeping and HIPAA requirements.
Knowledge of standard laboratory tests, x-rays, and basic diagnostic procedures.
Knowledge of medications commonly used for a wide variety of medical conditions, and their effects, reactions and contraindications; proper handling and administration of medications, under supervision of healthcare provider.
Knowledge and reporting requirements of child and adult abuse and neglect.
Knowledge of normal and abnormal family dynamics; differing cultural, religious, social, and economic factors affecting community medical care patients.
Knowledge of community resources for medical care, mental health care and social services.
Ability to effectively communicate with patients from various social, cultural, and economic and educational backgrounds.
Ability to work cooperatively with other medical care providers.
Ability to recognize and respond to cases of mental illness, substance abuse, and adult/child abuse and neglect.
Ability to gain cooperation of patients in the prescribed medical treatment plan.
Ability to accurately obtain medical histories.
Ability to work independently.
Ability to recognize and take immediate action in emergency and immediate need medical cases.
Ability to communicate clearly and concisely orally and in writing.
Ability to maintain strict patient confidentiality .
Physical Abilities:
While performing the responsibilities of the Medical Assistant job, the employee is required to talk and hear. The employee is often required to sit and use their hands and fingers, to handle or feel. The employee is often required to stand, walk, reach with arms and hands, climb or balance, and to stoop, kneel, crouch or crawl. Vision abilities required by this job include close vision.
QUALIFICATIONS, EXPERIENCE, EDUCATION
Minimum Qualifications:
High school diploma or equivalent.
CPR certification.
Must have ability to complete required documentation and required written follow-up.
Computer experience.
Must submit to and clear a Criminal Background check.
Preferred Qualifications:
Two years experience working in a clinic setting is recommended.
Positive working experience with similar patient populations.
Bi-Lingual Spanish/English.
