Controller Job Opening in Potomac, Maryland - The German International School is seeking a Senior Accountant who is ready to take the next step as a Controller. The Controller will take a hands-on approach to the day-to-day management of the Accounting department.
General Information for Controller Position:
The ideal candidate for the Controller position will be responsible for the financial functions of the German School Society, ensuring the application of generally accepted accounting principles (GAAP) to financial statements, and performing strategic financial management activities. The Controller reports to the Director of Administration and supports the Head of School, Board of Directors, faculty, staff, and families of the school. The Controller supervises the accounting staff.
OVERVIEW OF RESPONSIBILITIES for the CONTROLLER:
STRATEGIC
The Controller will be responsible for preparing annual budgets and multi-year projections in conjunction with the Director of Administration; working with budget stakeholders including the Board of Directors, Head of School and other administrators and department heads concerning budget development and performance;
Proposing long range, strategic financial plans including tuition structure, cash projections and capital improvement.
GENERAL ACCOUNTING AND FINANCIAL REPORTING
The Controller will be responsible for managing the accounting department, ensuring accurate and timely financial information;
Preparing monthly financial statements, including variance analyses;
Supervising student billing, accounts payable, and credit card accounting operations;
Preparing and reviewing journal entries and account reconciliations on a monthly basis;
Reviewing semi-monthly and monthly payroll preparation and ensuring the accurate recording in the ledger;
Providing support in the hiring and training of accounting department staff;
Ensuring timely, accurate payment of debt service;
Documenting and communicating accounting policies to affected employees and ensure compliance with such policies;
Providing monthly budget reports to budget managers;
Providing quarterly reports to Class Account Representatives and Teachers;
Performing timely Bank Reconciliations;
Responding to parents, faculty, staff, and students with regard to financial matters;
CASH
The Controller will be responsible for supervising all incoming cash receipts and deposits;
Maintaining daily cash balances;
Providing weekly cash reports to Director of Administration.
COMPLIANCE
The Controller will be responsible for ensuring compliance with Federal and State tax regulations and GAAP reporting requirements;
Ensuring compliance with German Government reporting requirements.
AUDIT
The Controller will be responsible for taking lead position on preparation of schedules and work papers for annual audit
Taking lead position on Form 990 preparation.
Maintaining permanent office files for all audit schedules prepared by school.
Assisting with the preparation of the Form 5500.
SURVEYS AND PEER REPORTING
The Controller will be responsible for preparing all periodic financial surveys and reports for the school?s trade organizations (e.g. NBOA, AISGW)
Preparing other similar data as requested
OTHER
The Controller will have other duties as assigned in support of the Director of Administration
REQUIREMENTS for the Controller Position:
CPA preferred
Bachelor?s degree in Accounting required
Minimum 5 years non-profit accounting experience, including managerial experience
Knowledge of 501(c)(3) requirements, and Independent school experience preferred
Professional written and verbal communication skills required
Excellent financial analytical skills
Experience with Excel and accounting software required; experience with Blackbaud Financial Edge software preferred
Knowledge of the German language is a plus
