Director of Marketing & Development Job Opening in los angeles, California - Director of Marketing & Development St. Turibius School is seeking a Director of Marketing & Development (DMD) to serve in this inner-city Catholic school in Los Angeles. This position is made possible through a grant from the Specialty Family Foundation. The DMD is charged with increasing funding and enrollment for this school, through improved visibility and financial support generated by his/her marketing and development The school and its DMD will belong to a cohort of nine inner-city Catholic grammar schools called the Catholic Schools Consortium. The DMD will receive dynamic training and support from the Specialty Family Foundation vis � vis the Foundation�s Director of Capacity Building who leads the initiative. The Specialty Family Foundation was established in 2008 with the goal of supporting needy individuals and communities in the Los Angeles area. The first of the foundation�s primary goal areas focuses on support for K-8th grade Catholic schools that serve poor communities in and around Los Angeles. On the one hand these schools produce incredible academic outcomes. A recent study documented that fully 99% of low-income Catholic school students in L.A. graduated from high school with 98% attending college. On the other hand, these schools are under tremendous financial pressure and many are on the verge of closing. The Specialty Family Foundation seeks innovative ways to reverse this trend. In December of 2008, the Foundation provided St. Turibius with a 3 � year grant through June of 2012. St. Turibius is seeking an innovative, entrepreneurial philanthropic leader with expertise in marketing and development. It is preferred that the candidate has some experience with K-12 educational systems. Qualified candidates should also specifically understand and support the value of a Catholic education for low-income students. The DMD will be charged with fundraising and relationship building within the communities that St. Turibius serves, involving program development and implementation, leading partnership activities, representing the school with a range of influential internal and external stakeholders, and providing support and technical assistance with regards to marketing and development to the school Principal. The DMD will report to the Principal of St. Turibius as an employee of the Archdiocese of Los Angeles and will have accountability to the Foundation in regards to providing requested reports, participating in CSC collaborative activities, receiving coaching and technical assistance, regular meetings and fulfilling the goals of the grant. Key Responsibilities The primary responsibilities of the position are as follows: Fundraising. Direct and implement a comprehensive development program on behalf of the school including a Capital Campaign. This role has a 75% emphasis on fundraising. Marketing. Develop a marketing and awareness strategy for increasing enrollment. This role has a 25% emphasis on boosting enrollment. Relationship Develop and maintain strong, positive working relationships with the school Principal, and with leaders from Specialty Family Foundation, as well as with key influence groups in the communities around each school. Work in collaboration with school and Foundation leadership on strategy, governance, growth and other issues. Provide information to the Foundation�s Director of Capacity Building in a timely and effective manner. Programs/Training. Participate in ongoing professional development opportunities offered by the Foundation. Budgeting and Fiscal Oversight. Coordinate with the Foundation�s Director of Capacity Building for budget development, grants payout, financial reports and fiscal oversight. Partner/Grantee Relations. Develop and maintain strong, positive working relationships with partner/funder organizations. Develop ways to evaluate the effectiveness of the Program�s grant making and report back to the Foundation�s Director of Capacity Building. External Relations. Develop and maintain constructive relationships and strategic partnerships with key external stakeholders. Represent the school effectively with community groups, the media, and other external groups. Find ways to recognize and bring attention to the work of the grantees and the interest areas of the Foundation with other potential funders. Qualifications Key qualifications include the following: Five to ten years of senior-level experience that demonstrates a sophisticated and deep knowledge of marketing and development techniques and best practices; prefer experience in working with schools from inner cities. Proficiency in Spanish. Knowledge of education and the issues of low-income children and their families. A demonstrated commitment to and passion for the mission and focus of St. Turibius School and the values and legacy that guide the Foundation�s grant making, specifically a belief in the value of Catholic education. Experience as a grant maker or relevant experience as a grant seeker. Experience and ability to seek out and bring innovative enterprises to the attention of the Principal and Director of Capacity Building. Experience with Capital Campaigns preferred. A solid understanding of the non-profit and public sector delivery systems and public policy issues in Los Angeles as they relate to and impact education. Knowledge of and experience dealing with multiple educational funding sources at the state and local levels. The ability to navigate successfully within a variety of public and private institutions, including K-12. An understanding of the challenges educators face in urban environments and how best to work with them in the grant-making process. Skilled at partnership building, project development, implementation and capacity-building. Highly skilled and comfortable interfacing with other grant makers (corporate, public and private foundations) in the greater Los Angeles area, and exploring and building opportunities for partnership. A track record of success working with diverse communities. Undergraduate degree is required; an advanced degree in education, marketing, business or a related field is preferred.
