Emergency Communications Dispatcher Job Opening in Jasper, Alabama - The fundamental requirements of a communications dispatcher is to evaluate incoming calls, dispatch unites, and transmit information and messages upon request and/or according to established policies and procedures. Employees are expected to demonstrate extensive communications skills and to exercise considerable judgment under pressure. The employee is responsible for making an effective, timely, professional response to calls. A dispatcher is responsible for maximizing patient care through efficient utilization of Paramedics and equipment. Perform dispatcher duties within Company policies and administrative guidelines.
This job description is classified as an ?essential employee? which requires the employee to report to duty in all types of natural or manmade situations; the employee must adhere to RPS?s weather and disaster work policy.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
Operates the computer CAD system, radio console and other electronic computer systems;
Answers incoming calls and extracts necessary information from patients, 911, citizens, etc. and enters information into the CAD;
Evaluates incoming calls to determine the nature and urgency of the call;
Transfers all calls regarding billing to appropriate destination;
Dispatches the appropriate EMS unit(s);
Keeps track of the status and location of all ambulances and personnel;
Transmits messages and information and directions to EMS units responding to calls;
Provides emergency medical self-help to citizens while EMS units are enroute;
Establishes communications between the field emergency personnel and hospitals when necessary;
Immediately relays structure fires and road closing information to the appropriate dispatchers;
Answers routine questions or refers calls to appropriate agencies on non-EMS inquiries;
Consults with supervisor for non-routine matters;
Attends appropriate training classes to upgrade emergency medical knowledge in order to maintain any certifications
Demonstrates continuous effort to improve communications operations, decrease dispatch times, streamline work processes, and work cooperatively and jointly to provide quality seamless customer services;
Works closely with other members of RPS personnel in a professional and courtesy manner.
Works to facilitate good customer relations ensuring all communications with external agencies and customers are carried out in a professional and courtesy manner.
MINIMUM JOB QUALIFICATIONS:
Knowledge of office practice and procedures.
Knowledge of arithmetic.
Ability to read and comprehend written communication.
Ability to comprehend verbal communication and translate into written communication.
Ability to communicate orally in the English language with the public or co-workers in face-to face one-on-one setting and/or using a telephone.
Ability to make decisions quickly and accurately.
Ability to learn and apply public safety regulations and procedures.
Ability to operate a sending-receiving radio console.
Ability to speak clearly and concisely.
Ability to deal with the public in a courteous and tactful manner.
Telecommunications experience (preferred, but not required).
Efficient with personal computer.
Ability to learn to read maps and convey accurate directions to crew members
Detail oriented and the ability to remain calm and effective under heavy workloads and in emergency situations.
Exercise good judgment in emergency situations.
Determine priorities of emergencies.
Obtain and act on information quickly in emergency situations.
Basic emergency medical procedures
RPS communications dispatching procedures
Basic medical terminology
Map reading and ability to communicate directions to crew-members
Ability to work varying hours including evenings, nights, weekends, and holidays.
Comprehend and make inferences from written materials such as operations manuals.
Learn and effectively communicate street locations, station locations, and geography of areas served.
WORK ENVIORNMENT
Usually takes place in clean, pleasant, and comfortable office settings. The work environment involves everyday risks or discomforts which require normal safety precautions typical of such places as offices, meeting and training rooms, libraries, and commercial vehicles, e.g., use of safe work practices with office equipment, avoidance of trips and falls, observance of fire regulations and traffic signals, etc. The work area is adequately lighted, heated and ventilated.
