POSITION SUMMARY:
The Diet Hostess interviews patients and families to screen for nutrition problems and provides information to the dietitian. This position is also responsible for: 1) keeping patient cardex and other communication devices current, recording diet changes as necessary, 2) answering telephone and relaying information as needed, 3) preparing menus for distribution and tally, 4) collecting, correcting and updating menus according to physicians? order and nutrition requirements, 5) ordering nourishment?s as needed, 6) performing calculations needed for nutrition care process such as calorie counts, meal patterns and meal census, 7) performing certain quality improvement tasks and 8) interacting as a team member with other disciplines.
POSITION REQUIREMENTS:
Essential:
Must have high school diploma, GED or work part time while attending school.
Must be able to measure accurately and have sufficient dexterity to handle food and equipment efficiently and safely.
Must be able to properly lift a minimum of 25 pounds with minimal effort following required safety guidelines.
Must be able to tolerate sudden and extreme changes in temperatures.
Must be able to make decisions based on events that occur within the unit.
Must be able to follow the Health Standards of the foodservice industry.
Must be able to direct the employees to meet the goals of the unit.
Job will require being able to handle customer complaints quickly and satisfactorily.
Must be able to communicate effectively with customers and clients.
Job will require working under stress when confronted with emergency situations which working with speed is essential.
Marginal:
One (1) year experience in hospital and/or extended care setting preferred.
POSITION RELATIONSHIPS:
The Diet Hostess reports to the Chief Clinical Dietitian with no supervisory responsibilities.
PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES / STANDARDS OF PERFORMANCE:
Maintains and updates the nutrition-related data within the Dietary Department.
Process diet changes and new diets accurately and promptly.
Write and prepare snacks/nourishment?s for patients/residents.
Report special ordered meal items at least 45 minutes before tray line begins.
Maintain meal count record.
Communicate to the Dietitian special needs or requests of patients, residents and staff.
Visit and provide assistance with menu selection to patients.
Deliver and retrieve menu to/from all patients except those receiving a clear liquid, full liquid or pureed diet.
Assist patients/residents as needed in a friendly manner.
Communicate special requests on menus to the Production Supervisor.
Document food preferences of extended care residents a minimum of once a month.
Assist the Clinical Dietitian with performance improvement activities as assigned.
Conduct a minimum of 50 monthly patient and resident satisfaction surveys for the Dietary Department.
Play important role in achieving a minimum of 90% patient satisfaction scores. Attempt to provide all eligible patients with menus and retrieve 100% of menus delivered.
Communicate patient needs to appropriate staff while maintaining patient confidentiality.
Discuss individual patient nutritional care needs with health team members in accordance with hospital protocol.
Maintain workplace professionalism.
Arrive at work on time.

Maintain a high level of confidentiality regarding departmental and company business; never releasing or discussing internal matters of a serious or sensitive nature outside the department or company.
Ensure that your supervisor is advised on a timely basis of potential problems.
