OPERATOR I - RAIL FLAW DETECTION VEHICLE Job Opening in corpus christi, Texas - OPERATOR I - RAIL FLAW DETECTION VEHICLE NORDCO RAIL SERVICES AND INSPECTION TECHNOLOGIES - POSITION TITLE -- Operator I DEPARTMENT - Fleet DATE -- 5/18/11 A. POSITION PURPOSE: Responsible for the safe operation and care of Nordco Rail Services and Inspection Technologies' rail flaw detection vehicles. Works under general supervision of the Fleet Manager, whose duties include management of the Fleet Services Department. B. CUSTOMER SERVICE COMMITMENT: Nordco Rail Services and Inspection Technologies (NRSIT) employees shall continuously strive to meet or exceed the expectations of both their internal and external customers. Questions and concerns shall be acknowledged on the same day whenever possible, but no later than the next business day. Issues shall be resolved as promptly as possible, with the goal of maximizing customer satisfaction. C. JOB QUALIFICATIONS: 1. Minimum high school diploma or GED. Associate's or Bachelor's degree in a technical-related discipline preferred. Mechanical technical training a plus. Level I Ultrasonic Testing certification a strong plus. 2. Minimum three (3) years technical or mechanical experience 3. One or more years of professional driver experience preferred. (Note: Requirements 2 and 3 may be met by an equivalent combination of education and experience.) 4. Must have a valid Class B (or Class A) CDL, or obtain one within 30 days of employment in the position. Must continually meet NRSIT driving standards. 5. Must possess or have the ability to acquire knowledge of Federal Department of Transportation Commercial Vehicle operation regulations, practices, and standards. 6. Must possess or have the ability to acquire knowledge of Federal Railroad Administration operation regulations, practices, and standards as it relates to rail flaw detection contractor operations. 7. Must have excellent oral and written communication skills. 8. Requires ability to handle diverse assignments in extreme remote locals with little to no supervision. 9. Must have strong mechanical aptitude. Experience utilizing hand tools preferred. 10. Requires experience with or the ability to learn how to use hyrail systems. 11. Requires experience with or the ability to learn how to maintain inventory records. 12. Must be experienced with or the ability to learn how to generate driver logs and fuel reports. 13. Must be able to follow aggressive travel schedules, including frequent flight and driving routines. 14. Must be detail oriented and maintain a high level of accuracy. 15. Requires initiative, maturity, good judgment, and the ability to establish and maintain professional working relationships. 16. Must be punctual and maintain acceptable attendance. 17. Must possess or be able to acquire a United States passport. 18. Must pass pre-employment medical exam, including drug screen and background investigation. 19. Must be able to maintain DOT Medical card 20. Subject to DOT Drug and Alcohol Testing regulations D. ESSENTIAL PHYSICAL JOB REQUIREMENTS: 1. Must be able to lift/carry up to 75 lbs. occasionally. 2. Must be able to safely operate a 33,000 lb heavy truck on road and rail at least 8 hours a day. 3. Must be able to perform occasional mechanical tasks. 4. Must be able to negotiate varied ground conditions including uneven, unstable, and steep grade conditions. 5. Must be capable of regularly climbing up to 10 ft. 6. Must be capable of working outside in all weather conditions, including severe cold, extreme heat, rain, and snow. E. JOB DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: 1. Drive NRSIT rail flaw detection vehicles on road and on rail in support of rail flaw detection activities. 2. Take direction from and assist Chief Operator during testing activities. 3. In conjunction with the Fleet Department, maintains the NRSIT rail flaw detection vehicle. This includes fueling, refilling water tanks, daily maintenance routines, and ensuring the timely execution of preventative maintenance and emergency repairs. 4. Maintains the ultrasonic testing carriage assembly and all associated components. 5. Ensures the vehicle has all required documentation including IFTA sticker, registration, and insurance. 6. Maintains the vehicle's inventory, submitting weekly inventory reports. 7. Must maintain and submit accurate driver log, fuel reports and any other required documentation. 8. Ensures the vehicle has current annual certifications for DOT and hyrail FRA. 9. Performs other job duties as assigned. F. WORK ENVIROMENT: 1. Primarily inside the rail flaw detection vehicle in varying locations, weather conditions, both on road and on rail. 2. Frequently will be required to be outdoors for extended periods of time in adverse weather conditions including but not limited to high heat, below freezing temperatures, rain, and snow. 3. During rail flaw detection operations, working on live track, regarded as a high risk environment. 4. Extensive travel primarily within the continental United States but can include Canada. F. REPORTS TO: Fleet Manager G. SUPERVISES: None. This position requires EXTENSIVE TRAVEL up to 3-4 months over the road at a time, without home time. We are looking for candidates throughout the United States. �Compensation: We offer an excellent benefit package the 1st of the month following a 60-day probationary period. 2 weeks paid vacation after 1 year of employment, additional 8 hours of earned time off acquired for every 15 days in the field. Pay based on experience and skill level. Average Operator pay, including mandatory overtime, ranges from $30,000-$35,000/year plus $25/day per diem (for meals) for every day you are out in the field.
