Controller Job Opening in Waterbury, Connecticut - POSITION SUMMARY/PURPOSE
The Controller is a key member of the finance team and integral in supporting the CFO in the achievement of the daily financial, accounting and reporting functions and objectives of the Agency.
The Controller will be expected to maintain and improve existing processes, assist in the development of financial and accounting policies. This newly created position will require a roll-up your sleeves attitude that requires strong attention to detail, problem solving, analysis, and communication skills. Strong knowledge of accounting, financial statement preparation and grant reporting required. The successful candidate will have an aptitude to see the big picture, be comfortable in an environment that supports many different programs and has the ability to manage change.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
The Controller will report and support the CFO on a daily basis in the financial operations of the company. Will provide direction to the accounting staff, monitoring work flow status and ensuring that deadlines are met.
Complies with federal, state, and local legal requirements by studying existing and new legislation; anticipating future legislation; enforcing adherence to requirements; filing financial reports; advising management on needed actions.
Ensures operation of equipment by establishing preventive maintenance requirements and service contracts; maintaining equipment inventories; evaluating new equipment and techniques.
Oversee daily accounting functions including grant accounting, G/L, AR, AP, and Payroll.
Responsible for the preparation of grant budgets, grant reports, and compilation of the annual operating budget.
Responsible for development of journal entries, reconciliations, accrual analysis, account analysis, analytical reports as necessary.
Monitor and review month end reporting cycle, ensuring all reporting deadlines are met. Preparation of Form 990 and related worksheets.
Analyze accounting processes and workflows to ensure efficiencies and proper controls exist.
Guides financial decisions by establishing, monitoring, and enforcing policies and procedures. Develop, recommend and implement accounting policies and procedures.
Complete implementation projects in subsidiary accounting programs, time keeping programs, medical records programs.
Ability to work independently and with members of management.
Perform other related duties as required.

RESOURCE MANAGEMENT
Work collaboratively with CFO on budget preparation and expense management. Control operating expenses in compliance with budget. Provide continuous analysis and reports on variations from established budgets.
Responsible for the planning and preparation of revenue and expense projections covering all financial and human resource costs consumed by assigned areas including, capital equipment, operating budgets, personnel budgets and other expenses. Monitors and regulates all expenditures to achieve established budgetary goals.
Plan, organize and direct work of subordinate unit; define expectations and deliverables; establish procedures, practices, and standards; hire staff appropriate to the position; monitor deliverables and productivity; identify and address deficiencies.
Recommend, implement, and communicate operating policies and procedures to all subordinates on an on-going basis.
Through collaboration, develop and recommend best practices; oversee implementation of practices and programs. Identify and recommend opportunities for improvement of services provided. Encourage positive response to new opportunities, new technology and changes in not-for-profit.
STAFF MANAGEMENT
Sets high but attainable standards and demanding expectations for self and subordinates to continuously challenge the current standards. Develop performance plans for all direct reports.
Provide individual and business unit performance feedback to subordinates on a regular and timely basis through day to day conversation and formal performance reviews in accordance with Easterseals guidelines.
Responsible for establishing a ?Team? culture and using a variety of motivational techniques to encourage ownership of staff in the business.
Recommend compensation actions consistent with organizational guidelines.
The incumbents are expected, in consultation with Human Resources, to address and resolve employee relations? issues in a timely manner and institute appropriate measures to correct issues.
Provides training consistent with current and future job requirements. Function as mentor/preceptor for staff members through lectures, hands-on demonstrations, and coaching. Foster an environment conducive to on-going learning and education.

Maintain and enhance the image of the organization with municipal agencies and the general public through active participation in community and industry affairs; encourage subordinates to participate actively in local, state, and national affairs, as they pertain to the organization.
Must be knowledgeable of the current market conditions and competitor strategies and react to any changes that could impact market share and/or negatively impact customer relations.
JOB KNOWLEDGE, SKILL REQUIREMENTS, AND DESIRED ATTRIBUTES
Strong proficiency in Microsoft Office ? Excel, Word and PowerPoint, Must be able to Manage Processes, Financial Software, Develop Standards, Audit, Accounting, Corporate Finance, Track Budget Expenses, Financial Skills, Analyze Information and Develop Budgets, This position may be authorized to have access to protected Health Information (PHI) to perform specific job duties.
EDUCATION
Bachelor?s degree in accounting from a US accredited college/university required.
EXPERIENCE
Minimum of 8 years of experience required. Experience in public accounting, auditing not-for-profits, State of CT single audit and Form 990 preparation. Strong experience in General Ledger Management required. Must have at least 4 years? experience directly supervising staff.
