About the Organization:
The UCAR Community Programs provide innovative resources, tools, and services in support of the research and education goals of the atmospheric and Earth system sciences community. A major focus for UCP is making sure the science from NCAR and UCAR institutions is translated in novel ways to a variety of audiences and stakeholders.
The Cooperative Programs for the Advancement of Earth System Science (CPAESS) is a new program combining the expertise of two prior UCAR divisions: the Joint Office for Science Support (JOSS) and the Visiting Scientist Programs (VSP). CPAESS develops customizable solutions to complex scientific challenges by fostering scientific leadership and workforce, building community collaborations, and facilitating the advancement of research for the benefit of society.
Job Overview:
This position is under the Joint Center for Satellite Data Assimilation (JCSDA) and provides software engineering support for the enhancement and maintenance of the Community Radiative Transfer Model (CRTM), including acting as code manager. The CRTM represents the connection between the satellite radiance observations and the atmosphere. This connection is used to allow the satellite radiance observations to be incorporated into data assimilation systems and the information in these observations to be extracted and used for numerical weather prediction, aerosol and trace gas prediction and many other applications. The CRTM represents the cornerstone of the JCSDA and is used by many groups including NOAA/NESDIS, NASA/GMAO, NOAA/NCEP/EMC, U.S. Navy FNMOC, and others.
Responsibilities:
Provide support for the design and development of improvements to the CRTM code to allow increased accuracy, capability, and efficiency. This includes software support and documentation for the CRTM code repository.
Under the supervision of the CRTM Project manager, coordinate the work from other team members. Quarterly reports to the JCSDA are expected and daily interaction with government scientists and contractors, and other members of the CRTM project.
Presentations and attendance at national or international scientific conferences may be expected.
Qualifications:
Bachelor?s degree in computer science and four to six years? of related experience; or equivalent combination of education and experience.
Some background in atmospheric radiative transfer ideally with experience in satellite data assimilation or retrievals is desired.
Strong programming (particularly Fortran 90) and scripting skills are a necessity.
Works as a part of a larger group using a modern code management (Agile, git, continuous integration, ?).
Highly collaborative, organized, and detail-oriented.
Coordinate the development of the CRTM code across JCSDA partners.
