Director of Software Engineering Job Opening in Hartford, Connecticut - Our client a global multi-billion dollar company with a great deal of product diversity is seeking a Director of Software Engineering for one of their business units. The Director of Software Engineering will be in charge of managing and coordinating the life cycle productivity activities including verification and validation of a Digital Product Platform. This will include leading a team of software engineers and managers in product development and aftermarket support. The Director of Software Engineering will manage complex software tasks and will develop and build a highly skilled team of engineers. This leadership position will be responsible for new product design, design enhancements, corrective actions and product release of mission critical product platforms. This role will have direct reports in multiple locations around the globe.
PRIMARY DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
Directs the management, strategic development and deployment of the software development involving cross-functional resources.
Provide inputs and insights into the strategic product portfolio roadmap.
Lead the software development life cycle to bring to market quality products.
Provides the 3 ? 5 year assigned platform technical vision/roadmap and leadership for developing and implementing initiatives for improving cost effectiveness and quality in a constantly changing environment.
Supervises and provides input for analysis and prioritization change requests.
Develops, coordinates, guides and maintains development of the technical strategic and tactical platform plans in support of the overall corporate objectives.
Strong leadership qualities, including a hands-on, non-bureaucratic leadership style, to include open and frequent communications at all levels of the organization and a genuine sensitivity to the development needs of the organization.
Defines a vision for meeting current and future digital development needs, while ensuring alignment and integration of software/hardware development with the overall vision, mission, and values of the corporation.
Oversees budgeting, staffing, staff development and supplier partnership management.
Establish, gain alignment and implement short and long-range program goals, objectives and operating procedures.
Recruit, train, coach/mentor, manage staff performance and delegate with support.
Directs program specific research and technology development of new technologies and methodologies.
Evaluates industry publications and studies and provides business development support.
Responsible for the coordination, preparation and delivery of activity and progress reports regarding the activities of the program.
Lead, participates and facilitates team meetings.
Perform other duties as assigned.

EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE:
BS Degree in Computer Science, Electrical Engineering or related technical field required; MBA preferred.
10+ yrs. of software experience in a leadership role working with customers and other departments in a matrix environment.
Provide operational leadership, career facilitation and direction to direct reports, contractors and distributed teams.
Strong object-oriented design skills and a minimum of 7 years of professional software development experience using C++ in a commercial environment.
Experienced in testing methodologies and implementation.
Experience in strategic planning and execution.
Experience with developing graphics pipelines for design and simulation products with intensive user interactions and complex geometric models.
Excellent skills in problem analysis including the ability to identify and strike the right balance amongst competing approaches and techniques.
Experience applying Lean principles is a PLUS!
Proven written, verbal presentation and communication skills for interfacing with other product and development teams and project stakeholders (including the customer), regionally, nationally and globally.
Action-oriented, decisive approach to work required, with the willingness to take a hands-on role to ensure the deliverables are met on time
Strong executive leadership ? excellent communication skills, collaborative, empowers others, understands facilitative leadership and change management (across multiple organizations)
Effective performance and talent management of team including making effective hire decisions, developing and training employees, coaching for optimal performance, providing regular feedback on performance, taking appropriate corrective action when needed to promote optimal employee performance and low staff turnover.
