Director of Nursing Job Opening in Gulfport, Mississippi - JOB SUMMARY The Director of Nursing is a Registered Nurse responsible for the administration of the nursing department in a Long Term Care Facility. This includes the overall planning and organizing of activities and staffing of the nursing department, participating in the financial management of the department including budgetary planning, equipment and supplies procurement and expense monitoring and responsibility. Other functions include all items related to departments including performance improvement activities, staff meetings, and implementation of new processes. This position is 24 hours, seven day per week responsibility for the functioning of the department. This person is a member of the nursing administrative team and reports directly to the Administrator of the Long Term Care Facility.
Main Functions
Coordinates nursing schedules and payroll a timely manner. Creating schedules, implementing staff rotations, and enacting rescheduling needs that address the current demands of the facility
Ensures nursing care consultation is in accordance with hospital, state, and federal policies and procedures.
Conducts staff meetings on a regular basis.
Takes appropriate action in emergency situations.
Investigates and writes a report on Incident Reports
Is available and on call 24 hours per day. Arranges for appropriate coverage when unable to be on call.
Monitors staff performance and attendance. Records variances and counsels staff as appropriate in collaboration with Human Resources Manager and Administrator.
Oversees Resident Care Managers and outlines role expectations. Ensures duties assigned are performed.
Demonstrates knowledge of licensing standards and regulations as they pertain to nursing.
Conducts walking rounds to assess unit environment and staff issues.
Ensures that nursing documentation is appropriate and according to policy and procedures.
Communicates with department directors to ensure team focused, patient centered care.
Ensures staff conduct remains professional and consistent with hospital policies and procedures.
Provides training to staff regarding nursing policies.
Provides training to staff regarding new processes.
Attends meetings as required and is timely in attendance.
Ensures the fiscal management of the nursing department annual budget.
Ability to prepare reports.
Monitors staff certifications and mandatory educational requirements.
Informing all nurses of any new procedure or policy implementations introduced by the healthcare facility?s administration
Interviewing, hiring, and training nurses and other non-licensed personnel
Ensuring that work standards, legal procedures and ethical issues regarding nursing practices are adhered to at all times
Maintaining open channels of communication among nurses and nursing managers in order to enhance operational methods and provide optimal patient care within the facility
Creation and submission of a variety of reports to higher administration recapitulating problems, goals and any pertinent developments influencing the operation of the facility
Remaining up-to-date with the latest information about products, equipment, and services relevant to the field of nursing and healthcare
Monitoring job performance of shift nurses, nursing managers, and directors in order to regularly evaluate each nurse and suggest avenues for growth
Supervising regular education-oriented meetings in which state and federal guideline changes are discussed with nursing staff in addition to any recent developments in the medical field that relates to nursing
Assisting facility administration with annual budget reports by communicating the necessity for new equipment, additional personnel, or other items that directly improve the operation of the facility
Maintaining effective infection control procedural protocol that ensures patients and staff are not being exposed to disease-causing organisms
Overseeing the utilization of educational programs so that the nursing staff remains cognizant of the latest techniques and medical information
Implementing disciplinary procedures when necessary
Possessing a deep awareness of the health care needs and difficulties encountered when treating a diversity of individuals possessing different ethnic, social, and cultural backgrounds
Must have current clinical skills in order to step in and assist with patient care as needed.
Create a nursing environment that fosters collaboration
Partner with physicians to ensure a smooth workflow
Ensure that nursing standards are upheld
Maintain regulatory and compliance approvals and accreditations
Work with senior management and medical staff to develop strategic plans
Cultivate relationships across functions and departments
Serve as a spokesperson for nursing
Physical/ Mental Demands and Environment
Ability to withstand considerable walking, standing, sitting, bending, kneeling, and stooping on a daily basis. Able to lift at least 50 pounds unassisted.
Requires the ability to speak clearly, hear, read and write in English. Manual dexterity, standing or sitting for long periods, coordination of information and activities, performing basic mathematical calculations, working under the stress of deadlines, and processing. Equipment Requirements
Must be able to use computers, phones, and copiers, and fax machines. Applicant must be proficient with of Microsoft Windows including Word and Excel.

Scope and Complexity
Collaborates with ancillary support staff to provide a safe, clean, and secure environment for patients and staff. Helps to ensure proper supply levels of materials and equipment within the department. Participates in open communication within nursing unit and other care units and departments to ensure appropriate care. Attends and participates in the practice of emergency procedures, fire drills, evacuation procedures and internal / external disaster drills. Works with medical staff to coordinate medical and nursing management of patient care. Participates in quality assessment and improvement surveys to help Nursing leadership provide the best working environment possible for its staff.
Minimum Qualifications
Graduate of an accredited School of Nursing
BSN Required
Master?s Degree in Nursing, Healthcare Administration, or related field preferred
At least 3 years management experience in a Long Term Care Facility and the ability to work under stressful situations Possesses excellent oral, written, and computer communication skills
