Sr. Application Developer (Java) Job Opening in Worcester, Massachusetts - *This is a contract to permanent role. Must be a U.S. Citizen or Green Card holder to be considered. Local candidates only please.
Primary Responsibilities and Activities
Partnering with architecture and senior technical leadership, interprets and contributes to and may own the technical design and specifications, may assist in the evaluation and selection for application packages and assist with buy vs. build recommendations, writes code, and assists in development of new applications and products and enhancements to existing applications and products.
Writes test cases and executes thorough unit testing to verify the accuracy and quality of all software developed identify and anticipate areas that may need additional performance system bottlenecks.. This may include preparation of sample test data, execution of scripts and programs, and system integration testing. Supports Quality Assurance and Business testing resources through their activities
Performs required functions in accordance with various application development methodologies and proposes process enhancements. i.e. Agile / Waterfall etc.
Identifies risks, escalates appropriately, provides guidance and recommends alternative approaches.
Leads design and setup of multiple test environments.
Engages in application defect resolution and proactively identifies defect patterns and other potential system issues during the project lifecycle and in support of production systems.
Adheres to all application development quality standards and procedures and suggests areas of improvement. As applicable completes peer review and reinforces standards
Will support technical implementation planning and execution of software releases.
Participates in project planning, this includes providing insight and guidance on technical skills required on the initiative
Stays current and builds knowledge of programming languages, application development tools, best practices, and methodologies. Applies this knowledge to effective business solutioning in conjunction with stakeholders; provides advice, educates and facilitates informed decisions
Provides timely and accurate updates on assigned work activities; proactively identifies risks and challenges.
Collaborates and facilitates effectively with team members and is accountable for best practices, coding standards, including offsite and offshore partners. Provides or supports training and documentation related to technology new to the organization
Builds knowledge of P& C insurance concepts, business processes and Hanover application systems.
Mentors other application developers
Understands how their work and projects align with business strategies and architectural roadmaps
May lead components of a project or product including the coordination of assignments.
May be a steward of application
Primary Responsibilities and Activities
Working with technical leadership to develop, validate and evangelize standards and best practices
Actively participate and drive initiatives in the application development COE (i.e. DevSecOps)
May have responsibility for human resource management and other key related responsibilities that include but are not limited to activities like performance reviews and,
Nice to haves:
Experience with Java JDK versions 1.6, 1.7 and 1.8 preferred · Experience with Hibernate, Jquery & Spring Java frameworks · Familiarity with IBM tools such as Process Center, IIB, MQ Data Cap would be a plus · Familiarity with Sencha EXT JS would also be a plus
Additional experience in the following areas would be helpful:
Web Services experience (SOAP and REST based)
Experience with IBM Process Center would be great
Familiarity with DevOps tools such as Docker, Ansible, Puppet, Maven
Familiarity with Tomcat and Websphere Application server desired
Experience with ETL tools particularly Power Center would be a plus as well
Typical Education / Certification
Bachelor?s Degree in Computer Science or Computer Engineering preferred
