Vice President of Nursing of Adult Acute Care and Emergency Services

Penn State Health Milton S. Hershey Medical Center (PSHHMC) is seeking a highly professional, visible and quality focused nursing leader with Magnet and academic medical center experience, and strong collaboration skills to assume the role of Vice-President of Nursing ? Adult Acute Care and Emergency Services. The VP of Nursing provides leadership, strategic direction, responsibility for the practice of Nursing and has overall responsibility and accountability for the patient care provided in the Adult Acute Care units and Emergency Department. As a member of the executive team, the VP of Nursing supports and facilitates an interdisciplinary team approach to the delivery of care. This includes creating a nursing environment in which collaboration in values and excellence in clinical care, education, research and community outreach is promoted and achieved. The VP of Nursing will develop and align nursing strategy to support overall hospital goals and take accountability for providing effective and meaningful leadership to execute on key initiatives.

The VP of Nursing reports to the PSHHMC Senior Vice President and Chief Nursing Officer. Overall the VP of Nursing is responsible for 719 FTEs of which 519 FTEs are RNs and an annual budget of just over $46.8 million. Reporting to the VP of Nursing are the following Nurse Managers:
· Nurse Manager, 3 rd floor South Addition
· Nurse Manager, 4 th floor Acute Care
· Nurse Manager, 5 th floor Acute Care
· Nurse Manager, 6 th floor Acute Care
· Nurse Manager, Penn State Hershey Cancer Institute, Inpatient
· Nurse Manager, Emergency Department
· Manager, Observation Unit
POSTION RESPONSIBILITIES

· Develop a strong collaborative working relationship with the Clinical Chairs and other members of the medical staff to achieve optimal programs and delivery models to care for patients.
· Actively participate with the CNO and Nursing Executive Committee to establish standards of nursing practice based on professional practice standards, published clinical practice guidelines and evidence-based information.
· Decision making within a shared governance model.
· Ensure that the true essence of a Magnet organization ? exemplary professional practice within nursing ? is maintained and achieves expected outcomes. This includes a comprehensive understanding of the role of nursing; the application of that role with patients, families, communities and interdisciplinary teams; and the application of new knowledge and evidence.
· Coach, mentor and develop leadership talent within the nursing organization, including the provision of outstanding clinical education and continuous support for educational advancement for all nursing staff.
· Assure compliance with standards set by the Nursing Executive Committee and regulatory and accreditation agencies.
· Establish an environment for continual growth and learning and professional development in research administrative and clinical nursing venues to serve as a backdrop to the provision of outstanding patient care and excellent patient satisfaction.
· Design and approve operating and capital budgets for assigned clinical programs and areas.
· Establish collaborative relationships with the Penn State School of Nursing and other professional nursing schools to develop curricula, programs and experiences to attract the highest quality student and graduate nurses to PSHMC as part of an assertive recruitment plan.
REQUIREMENTS, QUALIFICATIONS AND PERSONAL CHARACTERISTICS
· Graduate degree is required. If the graduate degree is in a related discipline other than nursing, then the baccalaureate must be in nursing. Currently licensed to practice as a Registered Nurse by Pennsylvania Board of Nurse Examiners, required.
· Certification is Nursing Administration is preferred.
· Representative knowledge, skills, and abilities of Nurse Administrators per the ANA Scope and Standards required.
· Five years of healthcare management experience, including nursing and physician relations experience required.
· Working knowledge and experience within a Magnet designated organization is strongly preferred.
