Principal Software Engineer: Satellite exp Job Opening in Silver Spring, Maryland - RCG Inc is seeking for an experienced Software Programmer (satellite-focused) for our client located in Silver Spring, MD. This is a contract 2+ years position with a potential opportunity to learn and grow further.

Clearance: Required (Public Trust)
Essential Duties:
Using the Satellite Broadcast Network (SBN), programmer is responsible for the maintenance, support (24x7), and enhancement of mission critical communications software systems for the National Weather Service as part of their AWIPS program.
Other Duties and Responsibilities:
Provides end users with weather and environmental data products each day via C-band satellite.
Transferring data between the NWS WFOs and the central Network Control Facility (NCF).
Develop tools and utilities to validate performance of AWIPS software at the required higher bandwidths.
Develop software enhancements required for ingest and processing at the NCF.
Charged with engineering the required interfaces to AWIPS for the next generation of GOES satellites.
Required Skills:
Linux systems administration experience required
Must have strong Unix/Linux skills (Red Hat Linux preferred) and be experienced with standard Unix/Linux programs (AWK, GREP, SED, find, SSH)
Strong Bash script programming skills
Strong C programming skills (5+ years)
In-depth knowledge of GNU C library
Experience with Unix sockets programming in C
Real-time programming experience
Good troubleshooting skills are a necessity
Excellent written and verbal communications skills in the English language
A minimum of 5+ years of demonstrated professional experience in an IT/Software Engineering role.
Other Preferred Skills/Education:
Java programming and experience
SMTP (sendmail and/or postfix) experience
Knowledge of securing Red Hat a plus
Minimum 2 years related experience working on civilian federal government agency contract(s); ability to pass background screening at the Public Trust level
Bachelor?s Degree in Computer Science or a related field
