POSITION SUMMARY
Title: Sterilization Technician
Reports to: Asst. Dental Director
Status: Non-Exempt
POSITION SUMMARY
The Dental Sterilization Technician?s primary responsibility is to ensure adequate supply of available sterile instruments to dental providers and team. Sterilization Technician is responsible for maintaining dental equipment and dental instruments. Dental Sterilization Technician is responsible for the care of all dental instruments within the designated sterilization area. Dental Sterilization Technician is responsible for maintaining attendance within the sterilization area. Dental Sterilization Technician ensures the highest quality standards are met and are in accordance with departmental procedures and established clinic standards.

PRIMARY TASKS AND DUTIES
Prepares instruments for sterilization and decontamination.
Operates sterilization specific equipment to clean, automate, decontaminate, and sterilize instruments and equipment. Adjusts and records pressure, temperature, and time in accordance with standard procedures.
Sorts and stores sterilized instruments and equipment in appropriate area.
Pre-packages cassettes, wraps cassettes in sterile paper, and attaches identification labels/color-coded tape.
Loads storage towers with cassettes, supplies, and equipment.
Receives, inspects, and verifies return of all contaminated instruments. Initiates procedures regarding missing or damaged instruments.
Logs instruments in and out in accordance with KCHC dental logging procedure.
Enters and retrieves data from computerized database.
Completes requisitions to order supplies. Receives, unpacks, labels, and places supplies in proper order on shelves or cluster cabinets.
Maintains and updates logs and records of supply transactions. Compiles and files documents such as packing slips, purchase requisitions, and vendor information.
Observes Universal Precautions regarding the handling of infectious waste.
Maintain dental equipment and supplies according to OSHA guidelines
Wash hands aseptically
Maintain personal safety and hygiene according to OSHA guidelines
Dispose of waste and hazardous materials in compliance with OSHA and KCHC regulations
Maintain infection control of work area according to OSHA and KCHC guidelines
Maintain MSDS
Maintain instruments and supplies in conditions that follow OSHA guidelines
Performs a variety of routine clerical duties.
Work with HeadStart to complete exam forms as required
SECONDARY TASKS AND DUTIES
Perform other related duties as required, which include but are not limited to:
Work on KCHC Quality Collaboratives, as needed.
Assist in training new staff.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS/KEY COMPETENCIES
General knowledge of sterilization and decontamination procedures for dental instruments.
Ability to perform basic mathematics.
Ability to follow oral and written instructions.
Ability to communicate effectively orally and in writing.
Ability to perform extensive standing and walking.
Ability to lift, and stock shelves of supplies and equipment.
Skill in operating equipment such as sonic washers, sterilizers, autoclaves.
Ability to operate computers and other standard office equipment.
Ability to maintain accurate and up-to-date records and logs.
Ability to wear and work in personal protective equipment.
Ability to communicate in English. Spanish (oral and written) a plus.
POSTION REQUIREMENTS
Education
High school diploma or higher education
Graduate from a Dental Assistant Program or relevant experience.
Experience
Demonstrated success in working with computers and programs.
