Staff Accountant Job Opening in Houston, Texas - Job Purpose

Fully understand all aspects of GAAP accounting in order to prepare, analyze and report timely accurate financial statements to management

Help maintain all transactions within the general ledger in order to produce reliable and actuate information

Assist Controller with day to day accounting functions

Help monitor accounting activity to ensure integrity and tight internal controls are in place

Primary Duties & Responsibilities

Assist in financial statement preparation

Preparation and filing of all compliance reports for local, state and federal agencies such as : Sales/Use Tax returns, Property taxes, US Census reports, Special yearly registration and filing

Understand GAAP Matching Principle and create journal entries to record monthly Sales and Costs of Sales in the correct month.

Understand prepaid assets and perform amortizations

Prepare month end journal entries for any necessary accruals

Understand intercompany transactions and record the proper entry

Perform a reconciliation of inventory levels to our operations system which holds all inventory values and transactions on a real time basis; Complete necessary journal entries

Import payroll files into our accounting system and reconcile to HR reports

Prepare and submit monthly sales tax returns

Manage fixed assets files and record depreciation

Review all overhead expenses and explain fluctuation from one month to the next

Review GL coding from Accounts Payable and prepare necessary journal entries to make corrections

Reconcile all balance sheet accounts on a monthly basis and maintain detailed schedules for each account

Record daily cash entries

Answers accounting questions from various departments

Assist with any audits and special accounting projects

Qualifications & Required Skills

Education- High School Diploma; Degreed Accountant a plus

Experience -5 or more years of financial accounting; builder supply industry a plus

Specialized knowledge ? GAAP accounting, financial statement preparation, Great Plains/Dynamics and FRX report writer experience a plus

Skills- Advanced skill level in Microsoft Office (Excel, Word, Access, Outlook), 10 key calculator, excellent analytical and problem solving skills, ability to multi-task, detail oriented, good record keeping skills, ability to prioritize workloads and meet deadlines.

Other personal characteristics- Team player, reliable, professional positive attitude with good communication skills, self-starter, strong organization skills, ability to work in a fast pace environment, and ability to adapt to change within your work environment
