The Controller is responsible for directing accounting operations, analysis, and treasury at Southern Minnesota Beet Sugar Cooperative (SMBSC). This includes producing regular financial reports, maintaining an adequate system of accounting records, and setting and enforcing a comprehensive set of controls and budgets/forecasts designed to mitigate risk, enhance the accuracy of the Company's reported financial results, and ensure reported results comply with generally accepted accounting principles (GAAP). This role formally oversees activities at Holly Seed, provides support to Spreckels Sugar Company, and leads corporate financial accounting and treasury for all locations. The Controller leads budgeting, forecasting, and operational analysis at SMBSC by proactively partnering with operations, key marketing/trading partners, and other stakeholders to drive critical decision making.
Essential Functions:
Accounting and Finance Operations
Directs all accounts, ledgers and reporting systems to ensure compliance with appropriate GAAP standards and regulatory requirements for all locations
Expert and owner of all matters reported in the external financial statements * Establishes and maintains internal controls and safeguards that verify the integrity of all systems, processes, and data, which includes, but is not limited to: internal and external monthly financial statements, shareholder accounting, accounts payable, purchase orders, expense reports, payroll processing, payroll tax compliance, billings, cash receipts, departmental budgets/forecasts, and actual expenditures
Analyzes financial data and presents financial reports in an accurate and timely manner; clearly communicates monthly and annual financial statements; monitors progress and changes; and communicates the Company's financial status with management
Develops and prepares financial reports and presentations for department leaders on a monthly or more frequent basis and presents this information in an easy to understand format, highlighting variances, suggesting options, and resolving discrepancies; understands profitability as well as risk-reward of alternatives
First point of contact for department leaders regarding their budgets/forecasts and will research, resolve, and explain inquiries related to budget/forecast variances * Leads the provision of information to external auditors for the annual audit
Leads senior leadership in the annual budgeting and monthly forecasting process; administers and reviews all financial plans and compares to actual results to identify, explain, and correct variances
Leads and is an expert on all shareholder accounting matters, including, but not limited to: structure and timing of beet payments and unit retains, beet payment , beet payment database and shareholder ledger system, beet seed pass-through, check-offs, receivables, shareholder communications
Leads treasury management for the Company and ensures efficient levels of bank financing; ability to fund cash outlays, including grower payments; and compliance with bank covenants/reporting, including compliance with the United States Department of Agriculture
Manages Company cash flow by working with management to understand business requirements; procures bank and government loans for the operation of the business; assesses financial efficacy of program operations; and establishes finance and administrative systems to support operations
Leads day-to-day modelling and monitoring of cash flows and takes action to ensure proper funding of the Company and optionality of financing sources
Leads long-range cash planning and is an expert in how cash inflows/outflows influence the Company's funding position, bank covenants, and financing sources * Coordinates the provision of information to the external tax team to assure the accurate and timely completion of all corporate income tax returns
Leads the procurement of insurance coverage for the company; works with insurance companies and insurance brokers to report, manage, and provide information for insurance claims
Ensures SMBSC production-shipping plans are accurate, cost effective and efficient, including understanding annual, monthly and day-to-day schedules and constraints in conjunction with the Company's external marketing/trading partners and the Director of Transportation and Logistics
Ensures zero plant downtime or slowdown due to exceeding inventory capacities
Ensures short positions are only entered into for strategic purposes rather than due to an imbalance of production-shipping * Periodically presents to the Board of Directors and Shareholders
Working knowledge of Political Action Committee accounting, rules and regulations to ensure compliance with all local, state and federal mandates

Coaches, develops, and mentors employee progression: providing resources to increase individual knowledge, conducting regular reviews evaluating employee performance, and working with employees to identify opportunities for improvement, and setting employment expectations through accountability
Leadership
Offers leadership by strengthening internal communications with staff at all levels throughout the Company; creates and promotes a positive and supportive work environment that promotes housekeeping and safety
Provides subject matter expertise on accounting and finance-related topics to the Executive Team, SMBSC Board of Directors, operations and other vested partners
Leads the formulation of operating and capital budgets/ forecasts; recommends and maintainsallocation for needs based on SMBSC's established financial guidelines and business planning process
Serves on leadership committees aimed at creating an Employer of Choice culture
Maintains memberships and affiliations with trade and/or professional organizations related to the company

Position Requirements
Bachelor?s degree in Accounting or Finance; Certified Public Accountant and/or Master?s in Business Administration preferred
Ten or more years of experience working in accounting with at least five years? experience coordinating audit activities and managing reporting
