BACKGROUND AND SCOPE OF RESPONSIBILITY
The Edwards Center, Inc. was founded in 1972 to address the residential, employment and social needs of men and women with developmental disabilities. Parents saw the need for services at a time when few existed, and under the leadership of founder Jean Edwards, created the Edwards Center. A strong Board of Directors along with a vital family advocacy organization keeps the organization from wavering from its mission. Edwards Center is a private non-profit organization governed by a Board of Directors with a strong family voice-Vox.
The Edwards Center offers residential services at 18 locations in Washington and
Clackamas Counties in the metropolitan area of Portland, Oregon. Day, recreational and employment services are also provided in both counties. The Organization currently has a staff of 226 and serves 300 clients, with an annual budget of approximately $11M.
We are looking for a leader who has tremendous integrity, great business skills, and values diverse opinions. This person should be a leader who has a servant?s heart, who listens to gain wisdom, is an encourager and who can develop a culture of trust. We want a leader who is a facilitator and who acts with humility; someone who knows how to develop other leaders. We seek a person who is not comfortable at the top of the pyramid, a person who does not have high ego needs but who supports each victory for the team. The position requires a leader who has a proven record of working with a board of directors and values the interplay between the board and families.

STRATEGIC DIRECTION
The Edwards Center has been through a period of rapid growth and investment in capital improvements including a new community center, state-of-the-art housing for families, and bringing all our homes up to the Gold Standard. It is now time to focus on our employment programs, develop the infrastructure to support quality level staffing, procedures and outcomes. With the departure of our recent executive director, we want to continue our long history of success and promote leadership engagement at all levels.
SOME OF THE FUNCTIONS OF OUR NEXT LEADER
Board Functions:
Works with the Board of Directors to shape the mission and strategic goals, and then works with other leaders within the organization to achieve the mission and goals. Actively works with the Board to help support and develop strong effective leadership and promotion of the organization.
Family Involvement:
Works with the parent/family organization-Vox- to create opportunities for families to provide input into the quality and standard of care of our residents. Family engagement is central to the heart of the Edwards Center.

Fund Development:
Works with the fund development team to develop and implement annual business/fund development plans including building relationships with major and prospective donors. Works closely with the development team to manage these relationships to reach annual goals. In addition, the new Lead will make direct asks, provide supports to Grant Development and Foundation requests.
Financial Management:
Oversees the development and approval of the annual budget with the Treasurer/Board. Monitors, measures and actively manages monthly performance against budgets and financials of the organization.
Leadership and Administration
Working with other senior leaders, administers the day-to-day operations of the organization in a consistent and effective manner.
Human Resources:
Leads, inspires and supports staff to perform to their maximum potential in a supportive work environment. Ensures that ?Best Practices? are the standard for all Human Resources operations.
Communications and Advocacy:
As one of the chief spokespersons, ensures that consistent messages come from the Organization and serves as a vibrant representative of the Edwards Center in the Community.
BACKGROUND NEEDED:
The successful candidate will have a proven record as a leader within a non-profit or a for-profit organization working under a board of directors. At least five years as organizational leader with high EQ. He/she will have a humble spirit, act as a selfless mentor, know how to hold themselves and others accountable for their commitments, and feel passionate about the mission of the Edwards Center. This person will have a bachelor?s degree, but graduate degree preferable, feel passionate about family input, have knowledge of the field of developmental disabilities as well as an understanding and compassion for our clients. Business management experience, including experience working with a board of directors; with accounting and budgeting; with direction and delegation of work; with hiring and firing, with supervision and training are all desired traits. The ideal candidate has excellent communication skills?written and oral. Desired candidate is comfortable and transparent in forum and among any of our stakeholders, from Board, to staff, to families, to clients, to private donors, to legislators and the media.
Grant writing background preferred as well as knowledge of the art of fundraising.
