The CityArts AmeriCorps Program is recruiting teaching artists who are interested in part-time AmeriCorps service. Apply your creative teaching skills to AmeriCorps, and join CityArts everyday afterschool to improve outcomes for Providence middle school youth!
Providence CityArts seeks 6 half-time after-school teaching artists to join our AmeriCorps Turnaround Teaching Artist Project (TTAP). This AmeriCorps program supports urban public schools, during school day and out-of-school time, to expand and enrich student learning through the arts. CityArts AmeriCorps team will serve as teaching artists in 2 Priority Providence Public Middle Schools. By introducing project-based art and design classes, and making connections to Science, Technology, Engineering, Math (STEAM) and literacy, CityArts AmeriCorps team will help to improve student engagement and skills for success in school. CityArts AmeriCorps team will collaborate on projects with classroom teachers as part of the school day.
The CityArts AmeriCorps TTAP program is ideally suited for teaching artists who are passionate about serving communities and making a difference in public school education. Prior art teaching experience in school or community setting is preferred (visual and design, music, theatre, dance), and a strong interest in the intersection of art and other subjects including science, technology, engineering, math and literacy, is preferred . Work with middle school youth is preferred. A strong performing or visual art practice is required.
The schedule is flexible and requires M-TH four hours per day between the hours of 9:00AM to 5:30PM for site-based instruction, and Friday mornings for cooperative planning and trainings.
CityArts TTAP Teaching Artist Responsibilities:
Work independently and as a team to develop and implement project-based arts curriculum in CityArts Afterschool Studios
Co-teach and mentor 30-60 students a week, in a dynamic school studio environment
Co-plan and collaborate with school educators on in-school STEAM activities, to connect school day curriculum and afterschool learning goals
Collect, document, and survey student progress, and your own professional practice using CityArts tools/instruments
Participate in CityArts out-of-school time camps / teaching and learning labs
Attend all pre-service and weekly trainings, team-building activities, and scheduled AmeriCorps service days
Submit timesheets and monthly reports on a regular timely basis
CityArts TTAP AmeriCorps Service Requirements:
Serve 20hrs/wk from August 28, 2017 to July 13, 2018 and complete 900 hours of service.
Standard hours (M-TH four hours per day between 9:30AM and 5:30PM and Friday mornings during school session); school vacation weeks (M-F 8:30-12:30)
Be at least 18 years old and have a high school diploma
Complete a state criminal background check and FBI fingerprint check
Have a strong interest and passion for art/design and working in urban public schools
Have reliable transportation to service site(s)
Have experience teaching arts to youth in a community or school setting
Ability to speak Spanish and/or experience with middle school youth is a plus
CityArts TTAP AmeriCorps Member support
The CityArts AmeriCorps program helps members build/strengthen their teaching practice through trainings, observations and coaching. Members will gain an understanding of urban school reform, curriculum development, skills in classroom management, problem solving and leadership. Two weeks of intensive skill development training plus weekly feedback and reflection sessions will support the member?s professional growth. Trainings are conducted by CityArts, faculty from RISD Dept. of Teaching and Learning in Art and Design and Brown University, Providence Afterschool Alliance, Providence Public Schools, and more.
Mandatory pre-service orientation and training will start August 28th, and weekly trainings/reporting throughout the academic year on Friday mornings. Members will be directly supervised by the CityArts AmeriCorps Program Director. Co-planning and prep are built into weekly meetings.
Program Benefits: Living stipend of $5,600, paid on a bi-weekly basis. Upon the successful completion of 900 service hours there is an education award of $2,907. Other AmeriCorps benefits include loan forbearance. For volunteers 55 and older, awards are transferable to children, foster children and grandchildren.
