Material Management
The scope of Materials Management will be inventory control and planning of in-plant raw materials movement, and waste management from Production.

The Material management department will be responsible for planning, organizing, and controlling all those activities principally concerned with the flow, accountability and traceability of raw materials within the organization by receiving, classifying, moving and storing material in an optimum way which will enhance the organizations ability to recover material for use and minimize distribution costs.
Today we must manage materials by evaluating the time in which the material takes to flow in/out to the internal customer, and documenting the costs in simple measurable terms. Material management provides "data" for procurement, production scheduling, inventory levels, shipping schedules, etc. To eliminate waste Material management must partner with Production, Accounting and IT and take the lead role in presenting key MM data that shows waste in the following areas: inventory, overproduction, defective material, material wait/queue time, over processing, under/over utilized assets and unnecessary movement. Material management can no longer just "process" the tasks involving material flow, but lead others to "see" the wastes in these tasks so they can be improved.
Planning/procuring the materials as per user requirement/ as per production plan so that inventory build-up in not there as well as production fluctuation is absorbed is the real materials management. In real life inventory cannot be eliminated hence a proposition for minimizing the same and meeting the requirement is the task of MATERIALS MANAGEMENT
The essence of Materials Management is simply the flow of materials should be in such an optimum way that neither the men have to wait to the materials nor the materials have to wait the men. Such a concept itself defines that inventory is maintained at optimum level & restrict the unnecessary blockage of cash.
Summarized task of Materials Management:
Receive, catalog, code raw materials and maintain traceability/ recovery of raw material records
Maintain inventory of raw materials inclusive of materials cut and classified as ?Drop?
Recovery of unused, salvageable and ?drop? material
Maintaining inventory control of usable drop and salvageable materials
Maintain scrap list and control waste weights
Maintain storage and yard locations of raw materials, condition of materials and recoverability of materials
Issue materials as needed to primary points of use
Report material loss, waste, usage, excess and non conformance
Recover material test reports and certificates of origin for raw materials in stock
Operations:
24 hour operation providing materials to primaries
Lift trucks capable of payload requirements permitting solo operations
Training of material handling personnel in material processing, coding, MTR and material identification
scrap recovery and classification
