Director of Communications Job Opening in Arlington, Virginia - The Treatment Advocacy Center (TAC) is seeking a Director of Communications to lead its communications strategies to drive the national conversation on overcoming barriers to the treatment of severe mental illness. This position will oversee all external communications, serve internal clients (development, advocacy and research) in their communications needs, respond to media inquiries and develop aggressive earned media strategies to build awareness of our work.
Essential Functions:
1. In consultation with senior staff and the Executive Director, develops annual and long-term communications strategies to expand the visibility of and knowledge of the organization among supporters, potential supporters, federal and state policymakers, and non-profit partners.
Develops and implements integrated communications strategies that support TAC fundraising, advocacy, research and community engagement goals.
Recognizes internal and external communications opportunities and solutions, and defines and executes appropriate strategies to support them.
Cultivates traditional and social media to promote TAC?s issues and goals.
Serves as the strategic and operational lead for media engagement.
Leads communications aspects of TAC?s national advocacy campaigns.
Develops a dynamic plan for TAC?s website and social media to increase supporters and activists and deepen their participation.
Responsible for writing, editing and production of all written publications, with a special emphasis on website and new media advocacy to both build TAC?s supporter list and increase our overall messaging impact.
Develops and implements in-state communications strategies to support TAC state advocacy campaigns.
In consultation with the TAC Office of Research and Public Affairs, develop communications strategies to support the release of research reports.
Monitors and reports regularly on the progress of the communications program.
2. Leads communications department and supervises communications staff.
Assure that all aspects of the department are designed, budgeted, organized and staffed to achieve maximum success

Build and support a high-functioning team to support TAC?s mission
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
Bachelor?s Degree (B.A.) or equivalent required, graduate degree preferred.
Extensive communications experience; at least five years of demonstrated success in communications functions including demonstrated professional growth in responsibilities; previous work in healthcare and/or mental illness a plus.
Experienced manager, including experience supervising staff.
Exceptional communicator and relationship builder with a strong writing style and ability to market the organization effectively.
Ability to work in team environment, to delegate, and to support colleagues at all levels of the organization
A professional and resourceful style; the ability to work independently and as a team player, to take initiative, and to manage multiple tasks and projects at a time.
Extensive experience working with the media and understanding of the outsized role that media engagement plays in TAC?s ability to accomplish its mission.
Experience with advocacy tools and strategies a significant plus.
