Job Title: Healthcare Collections Specialist
Immediate Supervisor Title: Practice Administrator
Job Supervisory Responsibilities: None
General Summary: A nonexempt position responsible for collecting patient invoices and health insurance claims.
Essential Job Responsibilities:
Producing a high level of customer service to patients or insurance companies by responding accurately and professionally to inquiries and telephone calls, and must be able to understand and explain reasons for denials and/or appeals.
Monitoring overdue patient accounts
Following up on claims from billing through final resolution
Collecting debts from patients and health insurance agencies
Providing review and remittance advice for payment errors, denials, and under payments
Acting cooperatively and courteously with patients, visitors, co-workers, and management
Processing and distributing copies of billings according to clinical policies.
Maintaining required billing records, reports, files, etc.
Adhering to procedures.
Other duties as assigned.
Education: High school diploma or equivalent
Experience: Two years of experience in medical collections preferred
Performance Requirements:
Knowledge:
Billing practices and clinical policies and procedures.
Working aging reports as well as being able to read and understand and Explanation of Benefits.
Coding and clinical operating policies.
ICD, CPT and HCPCS terminology.
Skills:
Customer service
Written and verbal communication and patient relations
Proficient in computer programs
Abilities:
Understand and interpret policies and regulations.
Read and interpret medical charts.
Examine documents for accuracy and completeness.
Work effectively with diverse patient populations, physicians, other employees and external agencies.
Equipment Operated: Standard office equipment including computers, fax machines, copiers, printers, telephones and the Electronic Health Records (EHR) system.
Work Environment: Position is in a medical office environment. Environmental hazards may be unpredictable including exposure to communicable diseases and biohazards.
Mental/Physical Requirements: Requires sitting, lifting and standing associated with a normal office environment.
