We are currently accepting qualified applications for a OR Registered Nurse/Scheduler to support one of our Government clients at beautiful Kessler AFB, MS.
Experience:
Minimum of three years? experience within the last five years and/or completion of a perioperative nursing course is mandatory in operating room assignments. Experience must include all phases of operating room technique such as preparing operating room units, preparing patients for surgery, and assisting medical officer during surgery; and conducting instrument and equipment sterilization procedures.
Familiarization and experience with use of the following information systems: Microsoft Office, Surgical scheduling systems, and electronic medical health records.
Knowledge of ICD9/10 and Current Procedural Terminology (CPT) coding (minimum of six months experience).
Knowledge of local and national healthcare standards such as Association of perioperative Nursing (AORN) Standards and Recommended Practices, The Joint Commission, Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA).
Specific procedures for which the OR RN/Scheduler shall be responsible.
Attend and participate in meetings during normal duty hours and professional staff in-services and other appropriate professional activities such as, but not limited to the following: Quality Improvement meeting, professional staff meetings, Commander's staff meetings, Operating Room Flight meetings, and others required by applicable regulations, MTF guidance, or as directed by the Operating Room Flight Commander or his/her designated representative.
Provides professional nursing care to patients undergoing surgery. Prepares and maintains operating room for all surgical procedures.
Establishes and utilizes a checklist to monitor the physical plan of the operating room and equipment for conformity to all national standards for ensuring safety for the patient and all personnel.
Assembles the type and quantity of material and special equipment needed for daily procedures and possible emergencies.
Circulates for surgical procedures.
Responds to surgical emergency requirements such as cardiac, pulmonary, or respiratory failure and hemorrhage.
Plans and performs end user training for specialty clinic schedulers.
Provides initial and interim training based on needs assessments.
Monitors projected surgery schedules in accordance with established scheduling guidelines, makes scheduling recommendations as necessary, in conjunction with the OR Operations Officer, to ensure optimal utilization of OR time, personnel, and material resources. Interfaces with clinic schedulers and surgical team for accuracy of scheduling requests and prioritization of patient flow in the operating room. Collaborates with Flight Officer to resolve scheduling conflicts as appropriate.
Develop, participate, and/or complete quality improvement and customer service initiatives, special projects, and reports as required by the Surgical Services Flight and/or KMC leadership to meet unit and organizational objectives.
Performs necessary fact-finding research and analysis in order to present findings, results, or recommendations.
Provides perioperative nursing care, for all types of patients admitted to the surgical suite for surgical intervention. Includes elective, urgent and emergency procedures on patients of all ages.
Assesses, plans, implements, and evaluates nursing care for all patients including newborns, children, adolescents, adults and the elderly; disabled to include visually and hearing impaired; and individuals of varying ethnic and religious backgrounds to include those who do not speak or understand English.
Provides accurate and complete documentation of patient care events and process improvement activities IAW MTF guidelines.
Participates and complies with quality and process improvement activities and events to ensure compliance with national standards and guidelines.
Knowledge of a variety of pharmacological agents used in patient treatment, the desired effects, side effects, and complications of their use as well as the accurate administration of the
pharmacologic agent, including dosage calculations as required.
Knowledge of the administrative requirements for proper documentation of patient's condition including disease progress, acknowledgement of teaching, and follow up care.
Knowledgeable of laboratory test values.
Skilled in setting up, operating and monitoring specialized medical equipment such as W infusion pumps, cardiac monitoring devices, EKG units, oxygen analyzers, nebulizers, and other unit specific equipment.
Adheres to perioperative, infection control and safety policies and procedures.
Safely operates and monitors specialized therapeutic and resuscitative equipment.
Skilled in setting up, operating and monitoring specialized medical equipment such as W infusion pumps, cardiac monitoring devices, EKG units, oxygen analyzers, nebulizers, and other unit specific equipment.
Assesses patients.
Effectively communicates and collaborates with a diverse group of people for the purpose of informing the healthcare team of plans/actions, for teaching/education to benefit the patient/family and organization.
Effectively uses appropriate communication format in addressing professional issues
Excellent written communication skills to perform accurate documentation, both written and electronic, of all activity in accordance with requirements.
Knowledge of computer operations and proficiency in the use of basic word processing data entry and automated medical records.
Must be able to synthesize data from a variety of sources and make appropriate clinical decisions.
Coordinates patient care through a continuum and facilitates the achievement of optimal outcomes in relation to care, quality and cost effectiveness
Ensures compliance with standards of care and practice in accordance with all established policies, procedures, and guidelines used in the medical treatment facility.
Provides care within ethical and legal boundaries.
Recognizes medical emergencies and responds appropriately.
Initiates CPR if required.
Assists surgical team in administering advanced cardiac life support measures when necessary.
Participates in the orientation and training of newly assigned personnel, as appropriate.
Acts as a preceptor to Phase II Surgical Scrub technicians and new OR nurses
Serves and participates in committees, functions and other meetings as directed.
Provides relevant and timely information to these groups, and assists with decision-making and process improvement.
Participates in customer service initiatives, and medical readiness activities, designed to enhance health services.
Communicate and collaborate with a multidisciplinary medical team acting as a role model and expert in the perioperative nursing care of patients.
Establishes and maintains good interpersonal relationships with co-workers, families, peers, and other health team members.
Completes orientation and competency verification programs in accordance with (IAW) unit guidelines.
Ensures a safe work environment, employee safe work habits and patient safety IAW regulatory agencies, infection control policies, and process improvement initiatives.
Plans, coordinates, and collaborates with the Flight Officer for the operating room surgical scheduling system.
Communicates schedule changes/updates with various inpatient and outpatient units/clinics for issues such as follow-on care and bed space.
Maintains open communication lines, both intradepartmentally and interdepartmentally, to provide for total needs of the patient.
Conducts preoperative and postoperative visits. Discusses operative procedures with patients and informs them of what to expect during surgery.
Consults with the operating surgeon and establishes priorities of care for each patient entering the operating suite.
Coordinates with other hospital units, which include recovery room, intensive care, obstetrics, and nursing units, on patients' progress and any special equipment or supplies that will be needed for the patient returning from surgery.
Directs and instructs personnel in preparing, sterilizing, and caring for operating room equipment and supplies. Maintains concise and complete records and reports.
Coordinates an ongoing, in-service education program to continually update knowledge and skills of all assigned operating room nursing personnel.
Provides care based upon the assessed needs of the patient in relation to the proposed procedure.
Assists in the preparation for The Joint Commission (TJC), AF, and other audits and inspections as directed.
Analyzes and presents data in a meaningful way, as in reports, spreadsheets and graphs using various software programs such as Microsoft Word, Excel, Access and PowerPoint.
Provide formal reports on clinical practice patterns according to established dashboard metrics. These include, but are not limited to, surgical case load, case time averages, and OR and Service Block time utilization.
Provides direction and assistance for the integration of data gathered in the Operating Room so that it can be stored, retrieved and evaluated.
Accesses surgical reports for analysis and trending of required metrics.
Designs and coordinates user ad hoc query procedures and reports.
Oversees and ensures accuracy and completeness of the electronic perioperative record (e.g. times, procedures, staff).
Provides requested data for Information Technology (IT), Air Force Medical Support Agency (AFMSA), and the Defense Health Agency (DHA). S3 program office as directed by the Flight Commander or designated representative.
Formal Education:
Must have at least a successful graduation from a nationally accredited school of nursing acceptable to the Surgeon General, HQ USAF and holding a current certification as a registered nurse (RN) is mandatory.
