We have a great team of developers, scientists and systems administrators who work together in building products that ingest, store, analyze, and maintain a very large amount of data. This will be a great opportunity for a candidate to work on a one-of-a-kind database environment that comprises massive amounts of weather data (hundreds of TB), and help with improving the security, scalability and availability of underlying systems.
The candidate will be working hand-in-hand with a diverse team of engineers and scientists, and under the guidance of a senior database architect. A strong computer science background with a deep curiosity to learn new technologies, and the aptitude to strike a balance between supporting existing databases and building new databases, are essential qualities. An ideal candidate will have experience working as an end-to-end database engineer ? as a database developer and administrator supporting a small- to medium-scale web application.
Responsibilities
Help administer various database systems, small- to very large-scale (tens of Terabytes) in size, comprised of fully-managed databases and AWS managed database services
Work closely with the Database Architect in the design and development of database administration scripts using home-grown and 3rd party tools, and in large re-engineering projects
Work in concert with the Application team, and design and build necessary database objects such as tables, views etc., for small- to medium-scale projects
Collaborate with Data Scientists and Technical Meteorologists, and help design the data flow pipeline, data retention procedures, and database schema
Improve the database infrastructure to enable support for an ever-growing number of applications, clients and usage
Help build better tools for monitoring critical databases in production and pre-production environments
Grow into a subject matter owner/expert on PostgreSQL database design and administration
Be a helping hand by sharing and teaching database design knowledge and SQL skills to the members of the broader team
Qualifications
Bachelor's degree in a technical discipline with at least 2 years of work experience; relevant work experience is also considered
Must have at least 1 year of hands-on experience, either working as a Database Developer or Database Administrator of relational database systems such as PostgreSQL, Oracle or MySQL
Must have at least 1 year of development experience using SQL, procedural language such as PL/SQL or PL/pgSQL; experience in other database interface language is also considered
Must be comfortable working with the Unix/Linux operating system, and should be able to install, monitor and troubleshoot database systems with native tools
Should have a good command of database design concepts such as entity relationship modeling, normalization, index strategies, modularization, procedures and partitioning
Should possess a good understanding of how relational database systems work internally, and how they influence operational performance at run-time
Experienced in writing complex scripts using scripting languages such as Bash, Perl or Python
Prior experience in administering multi-terabyte scale database deployments is highly desirable
Programming experience in Java or other modern object oriented languages is highly desirable
Experience using cloud infrastructure services such as AWS, and database service such as RDS PostgreSQL are desirable
Familiarity with NoSQL/NewSQL class of database technologies is considered desirable
