Position Overview:
An experienced, dynamic executive is needed to lead our life saving organization. Working with an active Board of Directors and dedicated staff, the Executive Director will demonstrate outstanding leadership, financial management, administration, fundraising and development. The successful candidate will also play an integral role in the marketing of current programs and facilitate program growth.
The Executive Director of HSWC is responsible for the overall management of all programs including the operation of the shelter. They will be follow the highest ethical standards to ensure accountability and compliance with all operational policies. Although duties may be delegated to appropriate members of the staff, the Executive Director will retain responsibility for their accomplishment.
Successful candidates will have a proven record of directing operations; leading and managing staff; fundraising and grant writing; developing partnerships; delivering outreach programs; and working with a Board of Directors. She or he will also demonstrate a passion for animal welfare.
Job Qualifications:
This position requires:
a minimum 5 years of senior management experience in a nonprofit or corporate environment, or 10 years of progressive leadership and management experience;
exceptional interpersonal, written and verbal communication skills;
excellent organizational skills
the ability to work independently, collaboratively, and decisively
proficiency in computer applications, including: MS Office, QuickBooks, etc.
a valid and unrestricted driver's license, submission to a background check, and a clear drug test
the ability to lift 50 lbs. and perform other physical activities as demanded by the position
Preference will be given to candidates with outstanding nonprofit, financial management, and/or fundraising experience. A bachelor?s degree is highly preferred.

This position reports to the Board of Directors.
Specific duties include, but are not limited to:
PERSONNEL
Oversee the hiring, supervising, evaluating, disciplining and termination of all shelter employees.
Supervise documentation related to human resources.
Authorize and encourage professional development of all employees.
ANIMAL MANAGEMENT
Ensure the well-being and humane treatment of animals entrusted to HSWC as mandated by Code of Virginia and the Virginia Board of Veterinary Medicine Regulations.
Maintain positive working relationships with area animal control officers and area shelters.
Maintains records in accordance with the laws of the Commonwealth of Virginia.
Maintain a live release rate of greater than 90%.
Implement short and long-term strategies, which responsibly reduce intakes, increase adoptions, improve animal care and help pets stay with their caregivers.
BOARD RELATIONS
Administer policies set by the Board and is responsible for representing the Board in the conduct of the day-to-day activities of animal shelter.
Serve as liaison between the Board of Directors and staff.
Attend Board meetings and committee meetings as appropriate.
Submit monthly and annual reports in all areas of responsibility.
Work with the Board to establish operational objectives and policies that support the organization?s mission and vision.
FINANCIAL MANAGEMENT
Responsible for supporting the Board of Director?s policies with regard to financial management and ensures the organization adheres to high standards in accounting and finance for budgeting, accounting, reporting, audits and financial planning.
Manage payroll and compensation records, operational expenses, and purchasing and procurement.
Work with the Board in budget development and oversight.
FUNDRAISING AND DEVELOPMENT
Enhance the organization?s fundraising and development capability through annual campaigns, special events, cultivation of potential donors, bequests, and special events coordinated with Board efforts.
Seek grant funding, manage the application process, and administer successful grants received.
Maintain records of current and potential donors.
PUBLIC RELATIONS
Promote a favorable image in the community through effective public relations at all levels.
Serve as the executive point of contact for area partners, regulatory organizations, local government and major donors.
Supervise social media and electronic/print marketing.
OUTREACH
Responsible for the oversight of HSWC?s outreach initiatives including volunteer programs, humane education programs and relationships with other community and animal organizations.
Encourage responsible pet ownership and spaying/neutering of companion animals in the community.
Cultivate and work to retain agency membership.
PROPERTY MANAGEMENT
Oversee all physical assets of the property and ensure they are appropriately safeguarded and maintained.
Ensure that equipment, vehicles, building(s) and other facilities are properly maintained, licensed and insured.
*Other duties may be assigned by the Board of Directors as needed.
