The Project Accountant will be responsible for reviewing and understanding research and development (R&D) activity for the industry. He/she will be responsible for all accounting functions from start to finish on all R&D projects obtaining the required information to develop all necessary documentation for internal and external requirements. The Project Accountant role is critical in helping identify, qualify and quantify R&D projects for federal and state R&D tax credits.
Essential Responsibilities and Duties
Responsible for leading and overseeing R&D work related to qualifying and supporting federal and state R&D credits, along with overseeing project and data maintenance in the accounting system.
Maintain active communication (daily) with the R&D group to obtain the necessary information as it pertains to the projects including but not limited to, components, specifications, testing, reporting, process development, expectations and ensure deadlines are met.
Review relevant information, cost summary schedules, tax computations, and written reports making necessary adjustments and/or recommendations.
Manage and implement multiple projects simultaneously, which will include computations, analysis, data gathering and coordination of resources
Manage federal credits and incentives opportunities including research and development tax credit/deductions analysis, Section 199 deduction engagements, and other federal credit incentive service offerings.
Demonstrate sound judgement and instincts with respect to evaluating complex scenarios involving various credits and incentives opportunities.
Create and monitor a system of controls, procedures, and internal forms for recording all R&D assets for each project
Tract the compilation of product R&D development costs into projects, and close out once finalized
Run weekly and monthly costing by project and prepare adjustments
Review inventory internal controls and make recommendations as needed for process improvements
Conduct the physical inventory count as needed for projects.
Prepare ad hoc reports and complete special projects as requested
Comply with all company policies, procedures and regulations.
Perform additional assignments, as directed by supervisor.
Job Qualifications
Bachelor?s degree in accounting or business management with an emphasis in accounting required
CPA certification preferred
Five (5) years? experience performing or managing R&D Tax Credit project OR A minimum of five (5) years? experience in public accounting or corporate taxation experience, including experience in accounting methods and credit services
Prior public accounting experience or experience in a manufacturing environment where product and process research and development are conducted is preferred
Experience with project management, including managing multiple projects simultaneously
Strong experience and understanding of IRS research and development regulations and tax depreciation rules and requirements
Strong analytical / critical thinking and problem solving skills are required to understand and appropriately response to a variety of process inquires
Strong written and oral communication skills are required to prepare process documentation, summarize recommendations for review by various levels of management and resolve various issues
Ability to complete work with a high degree of accuracy and attention to detail
Ability to manage time effectively to plan, organize, and prioritize tasks and responsibilities
Demonstrates the ability to hands on and the willingness to accept challenging projects outside areas of experience
Strong coordination, communication, facilitation and interpersonal skills are required.
Ability to effectively comprehend, gather and communicate accurate and relevant information and respond to questions in a timely and professional manner
Ability to work under pressure to meet company targets and deadlines, as well as customer demands
Ability to conduct one?s self in a professional manner with a high degree of customer service skills
Ability to perform mathematical and algebraic equations necessary to support successful job performance
